MUSIC SCHOLARSHIPS
Terms & Conditions (2011-12)
1. Applicants should apply to the University of Hull in two stages:
a. complete and submit an application via UCAS (deadline: January 15 2012)
b. complete and submit an internal application to the Music Admissions Tutor at the University of
Hull (deadline: January 15 2012). The form is available to download from www.hull.ac.uk/music
2. The following scholarships are available:
a. Harp Scholarship (1 award);
b. Organ Scholarship (1 award);
c. Marchant String Scholarship (4 awards; limited to violin, viola, cello and double bass players
only);
d. Ousley Choral Scholarship (1 award; limited to male singers only).
3. The music scholarships are normally available to home/EU and overseas applicants who apply to study
a single honours music degree programme at the University of Hull (BMus or BA) with the scholarship
relating to their first-study instrument/voice.
4. All suitable applicants will be invited to attend an Interview Day at the University of Hull (for overseas
students, you will be requested to submit a sample of work, including a recording of a recent
performance, in the first instance). Notification of the award will be made no later than the end of April
2012. The successful recipient must meet the terms of the UCAS offer and any other conditions as
stipulated by the Department. If the conditions of the offer are not met, the University reserves the right
to withdraw the award.
5. The normal entry requirement for single honours music applicants is 280-300+ points (BBB to BBC).
Scholarship applicants normally receive offers of 300+ points.
6. The scholarships are valued as follows:
a. Harp Scholarship: £1000 per year (= £3000 over three years) to include bursary money for
lessons;
b. Organ Scholarship: £2000 per year (= £6000 over three years) to include bursary money for
lessons. Extra funding for lessons abroad may be available, subject to progress;
c. Marchant String Scholarship: £400 per year (= £1200 over three years) in addition to bursary
money for lessons;
d. Ousley Choral Scholarship: £150 per year (= £450 over three years) in addition to bursary
money for lessons.
7. Any scholarship award will be reviewed on an annual basis and is subject to satisfactory progress: you
should achieve a minimum average score of 60% at the end of each level of your programme of study
(the Department has the discretion to consider other circumstances if this mark is not achieved).
8. Home/EU applicants may also be eligible to receive a University Ferens Scholarship of £1500 per year
for the first two years of the degree programme. This scholarship rewards academic excellence and any
applicant achieving A*AA (380 points, or equivalent) will be entitled to this award on entry. The award
will be reviewed after the first year and continuation is subject to satisfactory progress (see separate
Terms & Conditions for the University Ferens Scholarship via www.hull.ac.uk/music). For further

9. The scholar will have the opportunity to participate in masterclasses and workshops at the University
and will be expected to undertake duties in the University as requested by the Department, including:
a. Harp Scholar: playing at official and informal occasions, participating in ensembles and
orchestras, performing in recitals, taking part in workshops for composers;
b. Organ Scholar: responsibility for music in the University Chapel, director of the Chapel Choir,
playing at official occasions (e.g. degree ceremonies & other functions), performing in recitals.
The scholar will be expected to undertake duties at Beverley Minster as requested by the
Minster’s Music Director, including: services (twice-weekly choral evensong, Sunday morning
eucharist), choirs (Boys’/Men’s choir; Girls’ Choir; Music Group). Further information about

c. Marchant String Scholar: playing at official and informal occasions, participating in ensembles
and orchestras, performing in recitals, taking part in workshops for composers;
d. Ousley Choral Scholar: singing at official and informal occasions, participating in the
University Choir, Chapel Choir & other vocal ensembles, performing in recitals, taking part in
workshops for composers.
