SUSPENSION OF MAJORS WITHIN THE BACHELOR OF
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
Assoc Prof Atkinson confirmed with the members that discussion took
place in the Schools about the suspension of majors within the
Bachelor of Information Technology but that he hadn’t received any
feedback. The current situation is to suspend the Information
Technology Database and Management Majors within the Bachelor of
Information Technology from the 2009 intake of new students.
Therefore, a vote was called with the motion being passed with one
vote against.
CDC 23/08
7.
The Faculty of Business Computing Discipline Committee
recommend to the Dean to recommend to University Courses
Planning Committee (UCPC) to suspend the Database Major and
Management Major from the 2009 intake of new students.
USING ITC570/1 SUBJECTS IN A NEW RESEARCH MASTER
COURSE
The School of Computing and Maths is developing a new Master
course Master of Computationally Modelling based mainly Maths and
Hydrology modelling concepts that will also allow students to select
ITC*** subjects. Unfortunately, DVC (Academic) and UCPC did not
allow any new subject creation for the course therefore, one
alternative to this problem would be to use ITC570, ITC571 and
ITC532 as shell subjects to teach the hydrology concepts.
Discussion that subjects ITC570 and ITC571 were clear reading
subjects, already existing and are shells and the generic use of the
word project may be prejudicial. ITC532 and ITC533 - 16 credit point
subjects require students to be guided through some knowledge area
over a period of one or two sessions depending on which subject they
may be enrolled in. A case can be argued that in the process of that
guidance they could take on reading and produce some sort of output,
so further follow up would be required.

COMPUTER ACCESS FOR STUDENTS
The Division of Marketing currently has the following statement with
regards to computer access for students:
“CSU places great emphasis on services to its students. It is a leader
in the provision of online services and in particular, the use of the
internet in the support of teaching, administration and communications
with students. The online environment is so integrated into all aspects
of student life and the learning experience at CSU that the University
now assumes that all on campus and distance education students at
CSU will have ongoing access to an internet connected computer
capable of communicating with CSU online systems”.
After discussion about the statement issued by Division of Marketing
it was decided to notify them that there are specific requirements
4

needed for our computer courses. A letter to the Division of Marketing
to add a rider that there might be specific computer needs of students
to complete our courses. It should also be clarified, at what point
should the University specify to the student of there particular
computer requirements to complete courses at subject profile level or
subject outline level.
