Cognate Topic Guidelines
Topics are determined in consultation with, and must be approved by, all members of the Dissertation Supervisory Committee. The two cognates are intended to contribute to the students' knowledge of the PhD area without being related directly to their Dissertation
Proposal.
Candidates must be provided with a minimal reading list for each cognate topic from members of the PhD Comprehensive
Examination Committee. The cognate papers are intended to be an outline for examining the candidate rather than a comprehensive review. The intention is that detailed questioning, based on the written work, takes place during the oral portion of the PhD
Comprehensive Examination.
Submission of Written Work
At least 14 days prior to the oral portion of the PhD Comprehensive Examination, the student shall submit three papers to each member of the PhD Comprehensive Examination Committee. These papers shall be in the following format:
Two papers, one on each cognate area, which shall be no less than 10 double-spaced pages (excluding references).
One 15-20 double-spaced page Dissertation Proposal formatted as an external grant application.
For complete details, refer to the Student Handbook (PhD Programs) at www.yorku.ca/gradkahs/handbook.html
Deadlines (non-adherence to deadlines may result in termination)
Within 20 months of entering the PhD program, students shall submit to the Graduate Program Office, a completed PhD
Comprehensive Examination Approval of Topics for Dissertation Proposal and Cognate Areas form.
Within 28 months of entering the PhD program, students shall successfully complete their PhD Comprehensive Examination
