Montana Institute of the Environment Organizational Chart and Operations
The Montana Institute of the Environment has a specific Organizational Chart and Committee structure
(please see page 2):
1.
The Montana Institute of the Environment will be a Montana University System enterprise serving
across the MUS.
2.
There will be two IoE hubs; one at UM and one at MSU.
3.
There will be two co-Directors and two Program Operations Managers, one of each at both hubs of
the IoE.
4.
Each IoE hub will report administratively to the Provost and the Vice President for Research at their
respective campuses.
5.
Each hub will also be collaborative and complimentary to the other hub and through this
collaboration will be overseen by the Office of the Commissioner of Higher Education.
6.
The Montana IoE will administer operational committees designed to provide strategic planning,
advise on expenditure of resources and collaborate across the institutions of the IoE.
Montana IoE - Committee structure and responsibilities
Each hub will have each of these committees with coordination of committee activities across hubs.

Council responsibilities: Provide strategic and operational feedback for Montana IoE, ensure campus
coordination and communication regarding IoE activities, and serve on committees as appropriate
Advisory Committee [Focus Leader Faculty, Dept Chairs, Graduate Program Directors]
 Committee responsibilities: Advise and coordinate on Montana IoE programs, initiatives, development, and
other activities
Strategic Planning Committee [Provost, VPR, Dean CAS, Dean CFC, Science Team Leaders, UM IoE Director]
 Committee responsibilities: Develop a long-term strategic plan with a sustainable funding model for the
Montana IoE
Cyberinfrastructure Committee [High Performance Computing Users, VOEIS project Leaders]
 Committee responsibilities: Ensure coordination with EPSCoR Track 2 Cyberinfrastructure grant and develop
recommendations for statewide cyberinfrastructure capacity and coordination for Montana IoE research
Seminar Series Committee [Faculty]
 Committee responsibilities: Design and implement seminar series
Graduate Education Committee [Assoc Provost and Dean of the Graduate School, UM IoE Director, Faculty]
 Committee responsibilities: Design and implement fellowship program, recruiting strategies, and graduate
colloquium
Undergraduate Education Committee [Dean CAS, Dean CFC, Faculty]
 Committee responsibilities: Provide framework for undergraduate sustainability programs, advising, and
internships
Broader Engagement Committee [spectrUM Director, NARL Director, Director of Technology Transfer, Dean
SEL, IoE Program Manager]
 Committee responsibilities: Develop strategies/activities for outreach, statewide engagement, and national
visibility
