 Led team of 15 6th graders to improve their academic grades and develop leadership skills; met goal of
75% of students maintaining or improving core subject grades from first to third quarter
 Selected as curriculum lead; developed framework for academic support programming and coached staff
members in lesson planning and implementation
 Acted as primary liaison between Citizen Schools program and Mildred Avenue Middle School;
engaged 6th grade teachers in ongoing conversations around student academic progress, resulting in
greater teacher involvement in Citizen Schools events and stronger alignment between Citizen Schools
program elements and school learning objectives
 Trained and coached adult volunteers in designing and leading apprenticeships (10-week, hands-on
learning projects that enable students to apply their learning in real-world contexts and encourage
students to explore potential careers); partnered with lawyers, public relations executives,
environmentalists, musicians, engineers, and computer programmers to translate their knowledge
and passion into engaging, student-friendly activities
Staff Alumni Engagement Team
 Planned, launched, and managed a career coaching program to provide second-year Teaching Fellows
with differentiated support as they explored professional pathways; through outreach efforts, doubled
the program’s size to pair 30 second-year Fellows with senior-level Citizen Schools staff members
 Developed sustainable process to plan, write, edit, and distribute monthly e-newsletter to
communicate with 450 former Citizen Schools staff members
 Created survey to evaluate alumni satisfaction with Citizen Schools’ staff alumni engagement efforts;
used results to inform implementation plan that will guide FY10 programming and strategy

 Recruited, selected, trained, and managed a team of 15 college student volunteers to lead after-school
health education program for 25 Harlem elementary and middle school students
 Designed and implemented comprehensive assessment to measure program’s impact on students’
knowledge and behavior; in response to evaluation results, developed a new curriculum focused on
communication and application of knowledge
 Redefined volunteer roles and responsibilities to increase volunteer investment in program and create
leadership development opportunities; as a result of new team structure, number of qualified applicants
for organizational leadership positions doubled and volunteer retention remained at 90% throughout a
transitional program year
 Built partnerships with Harlem community organizations and Columbia University departments to
expand content and improve quality of volunteer trainings
