Academia Sinica Fellowships for Doctoral Candidates in the Humanities and Social Sciences 1. Purpose This Fellowship Program is designed to offer financial aid to doctoral candidates working in the Humanities and Social Sciences at Academia Sinica. The assistance is in the form of a stipend as well as research support. The fellowship is intended to assist the doctoral candidate to acquire the necessary skills during the period of his/her preparation of the Ph.D. dissertation in order to allow him/her to develop into an independent and productive research scholar. A secondary purpose of the Program is to provide opportunities for the doctoral candidate to become familiar with the intellectual programs and research facilities within Academia Sinica. Hopefully, this experience will cultivate his/her interest and motivation either to pursue a research career at Academia Sinica or to cooperate with Academia Sinica researchers in his/her own work at a later date. 2. Qualifications a. The program is opened to both non-R.O.C. and R.O.C. citizens. b. Both R.O.C. and Non-R.O.C. applicants must be full-time graduate students enrolled in a humanities and social science program either at a local university or a recognized program at a foreign university. c. The applicant must have completed the course work in an approved program of study and passed the comprehensive examination for the doctoral degree. In addition, the research plan of the applicant must be compatible with current research directions of Academia Sinica, where he plans to compose the dissertation. 3. The Fellowship a. The Fellowship appointment is normally awarded for a one-year period. However, it is renewable for a second year depending on the progress of the research and the preparation of the thesis dissertation. b. The stipend of Fellows is 35,000 NT dollars per month. c. Upon termination of the appointment, Fellows must submit to the Academic Advisory Committee of Academia Sinica a report describing the research completed ten days prior to the end of the term of appointment. d. The doctoral candidate is not eligible to receive any further subsidy during their candidacy. This includes compensation from employment outside AS. 4.Applications Each applicant should submit to the intended host Institute within Academia Sinica an curriculum vitae, official copies of his/her graduate academic records, a research plan, reprints of publications, and two letters of recommendation from the associated academic institution, together with the completed application form. 1 5. Review process a. A panel made up of representatives from the host Institute will invite at least two experts from within and outside of Academia Sinica to review the application. The recommendations from the host Institutes will be submitted to the Office of Academic Affair at Central Administration Office of Academia Sinica for final approval. b. The Academic Advisory Committee will select the most qualified candidates. 6. Funding sources of the Program This Program is funded by the “Main Theme Research Program” and the “Postdoctoral Advanced Training Program”. 2
