THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT EL PASO www.sacs.utep.edu Enhancing Student Success – Student Success in the Middle Years- The University of Texas provides a University-wide course of action for focused improvements in learning and learning outcome assessment in Student’s “middle years.” o QEP “Student Success in the Middle Years” has two goals thorough review and renewal of both (a) the University’s curriculum and (b) academic and career advising. Review of academic and career advising will facilitate students’ efficient and timely progress and provide students with specific professional and career guidance. Will offer Student Programs and Career Advising o UTEP has already implemented strong, entering student advising programs that focus on transitioning students into a university environment. Also includes a scholarship component of new scholarships. 1 HIGH POINT UNIVERSITY – NORTH CAROLINA http://www.highpoint.edu/ Self Society, World, and Vocation: A thematic Approach to Experiential Student LearningThe Plan focuses on several different forms of experimental learning, each of which is tied to the learning objectives of the University’s core curriculum. Strategic Planning The University will assess all aspects of the non-curricular student experience with the goal of improving student life and student engagement. The University will conduct a thorough evaluation of the internship program to determine both departmental and student needs. The University will sponsor a wider range of study abroad opportunities and will develop a plan for recruiting greater numbers of international students. The QEP in Institutional Context In the final analysis the broad focus of the QEP on improved experimental learning opportunities for students is consistent with High Point University’s historical purpose, academic mission, general education curriculum, and future goals and objectives. UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON- DOWNTOWN http://www.uhd.edu/ Student Engagement through Active Learning –the activities listed in this QEP also directly support the priorities established in the UHS Strategic Plan and will assist us in meeting the goals set forth in the State of Texas’s Closing the Gaps Plan. The first main focus of our QEP is on the new transition students must undergo to become engaged, knowledgeable University Citizens who not only understand the responsibilities of membership in the University Community but who value the resources and opportunities that community provides. The Plan’s second focus is to promote greater student engagement in the learning process itself through various intervention strategies, strategies that will provide students with the opportunity to employ the active learning practices that are most directly connected with student success. The general focus is interdisciplinary and global engagement. 2 THE UNIVERISTY OF SOUTHERN MISSISIPI http://www.usm.edu Improving Oral and Written Competencies – To improve oral and written competencies, the QEP Leadership Team collaborated with faculty in the English and Speech Communications departments to design two interventions. (1) Faculty training in methods to teach and assess writing and speaking competencies and (2) creation of writing and speech laboratories (labs) for student instruction.
