UNIVERSITY OF KENT FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES PLACEMENT MARKS 1. Regulations These conventions are governed by the requirements of the Regulations for Taught Programmes of Study and the Credit Framework and do not supersede them. 2. The Credit Framework The Credit Framework prescribes the volume of study undertaken abroad and within placements: The volume of credit to be awarded for the successful completion of student placement years, whether taken in industry or in academic institutions overseas as part of an approved undergraduate programme, will be 120 credits. The level of the credits will be stated in programme specifications. While such credits will contribute to the total volume of credits required for an award, they should not be included in any calculations undertaken for the purpose of determining fields of study for joint awards, major/minor awards or major/major/minor awards. (Section 11.4.1.2.) While the volume of study abroad will equate to 120 credits, the contribution the marks make to the final classification of awards will be half-weighted (i.e. the equivalent of 60 credits) except where expressly stated below. The contribution of studies abroad will be publicised within programme specifications. Unless stated to the contrary, marks from abroad will be converted to two, 60-credit marks by means described below, each half-weighted in the classification of awards (i.e. each with an equivalent weighting in the classification process of 30 credits). References to credits below should be taken as the full value ascribed to the volume of the modules concerned. 3. Mark Conversions Marks obtained abroad are converted to University of Kent marks (except where otherwise stated) in accordance with the tables available at: http://www.kent.ac.uk/european/yearabroad/youryear/after.html. 4. Concessions Board of examiners shall deal with concessionary evidence on an individual basis under their discretionary powers. Boards may also take account of particular academic difficulties encountered by students during the year abroad. Poor performance alone during the year abroad or the placement cannot be the basis for the use of discretion. 5. The Licence IUP at Lyon 3 is obtained over a range of courses with a total number of possible marks equal to 930 or 1020. Each examined unit contributes a multiple of 10 marks to the denominator of the final grade, which is expressed as a mark out of 20. The unit marks from Lyon are broken into marks out of 10 (so 14/20 becomes 7/10 twice) and ranked. The worst 25% of the marks will be discarded and the remaining marks in each quartile will be averaged and converted to a mark out of 20. b) For students for whom Lyon 3 is the home university there will be marks for modules totalling 240 credits: 120 from the final year at UoK and 120 derived from marks obtained in the Licence at Université Jean Moulin Lyon 3. The Licence in Lyon is obtained over a range of courses; each examined unit contributes a multiple of 10 to the total number of possible marks. The marks for each examined unit are broken into marks out of 10 (so 14/20 becomes 7/10 twice) and ranked. Each octile of the ranked marks is averaged and converted to a mark out of 20. German There will be two 60-credit modules for the German university (Marburg or Jena), each with an equivalent weighting of 30 credits in the classification process (Marburg) or four 30-credit modules, each with an equivalent weighting of 15 credits in the classification process (Jena). A student will normally have between 3 and 6 marks from Marburg and up to about 12 from Jena depending on the precise nature of the course taken. In the case of Marburg the best two marks will be used. In the case of Jena the best four marks will be used. Italian A student will have a varying number of marks from LUIC Castellanza, as the modules taken there vary in credits. Normally, 120 credits’ worth of modules are taken, of which the best (approximately) 80 credits will be used. 4 The best eight LIUC marks will be taken and averaged in pairs to give four marks, which will be taken and converted to UoK marks according to the conversion scale. The resulting four marks may be aggregated into two 60-credit marks if this gives a better class of degree. Spanish There will be two, 60-credit modules from Oviedo or Granada, each with an equivalent weighting of 30 credits in the classification process, or four 30-credit modules, each with an equivalent weighting of 15 credits in the classification process. A student will normally have five marks from the Spanish university. The four best marks will be taken and converted to UoK marks according to the conversion scale. The resulting four marks may be aggregated into two 60-credit marks if this gives a better class of degree. 6.6 Business Administration with Studies in Asia There will be two, 60-credit modules for the year abroad, each with an equivalent weighting of 30 credits in the classification process. Students study for 30 local credit units in the year. Most modules comprise three credit units. The mark conversion is applied to the best 21 credit units. Normally this will be achieved by converting each module’s grade to a Kent mark, putting marks in rank order and then calculating the average mark for the best and the next best 10½ units. 6.7 a) European Management Science/European Management Science with Computing (French) For students for whom Kent is the home university there will be two, 60-credit modules from Université Jean Moulin Lyon 3, each with an equivalent weighting of 30 credits in the classification process, or four 30-credit modules, each with an equivalent weighting of 15 credits in the classification process. The Licence IUP at Lyon 3 is obtained over a range of courses with a total number of possible marks normally equal to 960. Each examined module contributes a multiple of 10 marks to the denominator of the final grade, which is expressed as a mark out of 20. The module marks from Lyon are broken into marks out of 10 (so 14/20 becomes 7/10 twice) and ranked. The worst 25% of the marks will be discarded and the remaining marks in each quartile will be averaged and converted to a mark out of 20. Where it would be in the candidate's best interests four marks equal to the average of the four marks obtained above (or other groupings) may be used instead. b) For students for whom Lyon 3 is the home university, there will be marks for modules totalling 240 credits; 120 from the final year at UoK and 120 derived from marks obtained in the Licence at Université Jean Moulin Lyon 3. Where it would be in the candidate's best interests these 8 marks may be aggregated into four 30-credit marks, one for each quartile, or four equal 30-credit marks if this would give a higher class of degree. 5 6.8 European Management Science/European Management Science with Computing (German) There will be two 60-credit modules for the German university (Marburg or Jena), each with an equivalent weighting of 30 credits in the classification process (Marburg) or four 30-credit modules, each with an equivalent weighting of 15 credits in the classification process (Jena). A student will normally have between 3 and 6 marks from Marburg and up to about 12 from Jena depending on the precise nature of the course taken. In the case of Marburg the best two marks will be used and treated as 30-credit marks. In the case of Jena the best four marks will be used and treated as 15-credit marks. 6.9 European Management Science/European Management Science with Computing (Italian) A student will have a varying number of marks from LUIC Castellanza, as the modules taken there vary in credits. Normally, 120 credits’ worth of modules are taken, of which the best (approximately) 80 credits will be used. The best eight LIUC marks will be taken and averaged in pairs to give four marks, which will be taken and converted to UoK marks according to the conversion scale. The resulting four marks may be aggregated into two 60-credit marks if this gives a better class of degree. 6.10 European Management Science/European Management Science with Computing (Spanish) There will be two, 60-credit modules from Oviedo or Granada, each with an equivalent weighting of 30 credits in the classification process, or four 30-credit modules, each with an equivalent weighting of 15 credits in the classification process. A student will normally have five marks from the Spanish university. The four best marks will be taken and converted to UoK marks according to the conversion scale. The resulting four marks may be aggregated into two 60-credit marks if this gives a better class of degree. 6.11 Management Science with a Year in the Unites States of America There will be two, 60-credit modules for the year abroad, each with an equivalent weighting of 30 credits in the classification process. The grade point average for each of the two semesters in the university in the United States will be converted to a UoK mark. The conversion scale for each university will be consistent with the conversion scales published by the University at: http://www.kent.ac.uk/european/yearabroad/youryear/after.html. For the Universities of Indiana and California the conversion scale will be: UoK mark = 20 x US grade point average for semester. This is subject to change if, for example, grade point averages increase relative to UoK marks. A project (MA660) is a compulsory module in the final year. Students can use skills acquired during their exchange year in their project, for example by basing it on some aspect of either International Management, or on specific technical skills taught at the US university. 6 6.12 Undergraduate Degree Programmes with a Year in Industry 90 of the 120 credits for the placement year are on a Pass / Fail basis (“Business Placement Experience”).
