Pioneer Elementary School Optional Learning Environment Student Placement Form 2012-2013 School Year Dear Parent, The placement of your child for next year is a very important decision. The process for placement takes many hours: 1. Each teacher spends a great deal of time preparing information about your child to be considered for placement. Your child’s teacher prepares a placement card with information about your child’s learning strengths, areas where they may need more instruction, preferences, compatible classmates, special needs, and the best learning climate. 2. Members of the grade level meet together with their placement cards and build balanced classrooms. Their first consideration for placement is what is right for each individual child. a. Balanced classrooms are built to ensure success of all students. Some factors they consider are: i. Student profile iv. Academic balance vii. Special programs ii. Teacher recommendations v. Equitable class size iii. Group dynamics vi. Distribution of boys and girls b. Class lists are built and evaluated, parent “input” information is checked regarding the environment that best meets your child’s needs. If the current teacher has a different perspective from that of the parent, it is noted, and passed along for the principal to consider. 3. The lists are reviewed with the principal and the team. 4. Class lists are put aside and reviewed again when the staff is finalized during June & July. 5. Final review is made by the last week of July. 6. Class lists are posted prior to school opening. Parent input is always an option. It is not a requirement. As a school and district our philosophy is to value parent input. As you can see, we spend a great deal of time in making the placements and hope that you can place your trust in your current classroom teacher to make careful choices. If you wish to give additional information regarding the best type of environment and program for your child, please feel free to complete the “input” form on the back.
