Placement Supervisor Award for
Excellence in Mentoring: Nomination Guidelines
Background/Purpose
A fulfilling bridging program experience and successful professional and career
development depend on the mentoring relationships participants form with staff
and supervisors. Supervisors, in particular, play an essential role in participants'
success, as they are the link between classroom theory and practical
application in the workplace.
The BTMH Program sponsors this annual award in order to honour outstanding
mentoring of placement students by supervisors.
In addition to honouring individual supervisors for their concerns for participants,
it is the hope of the BTMH Program that these mentors will serve as role models
for their placement supervisor peers.
Award
Commemorative certificates for both recipient and agency will be presented at
the annual BTMH Graduation Ceremony.
Eligibility Criteria
The award recognizes one placement supervisor from each cohort who
demonstrates excellence in mentoring, and has been outstanding in supporting,
encouraging, and promoting placement students' education, professional and
personal development.
For the inaugural award presentation in September 2014, all past BTMH
placement supervisors are eligible (one chosen from each of Cohorts 1-7); going
forward, only supervisors from graduating cohorts will be eligible each year.
Excellence in mentoring is reflected in a supervisor’s outstanding ability to create
effective working relationships and constructive interactions that offer
appropriate guidance, feedback, and support, and involve encouragement,
openness, trust, and mutual respect. The supervisor should also possess excellent
interpersonal and communication skills, and be able to stimulate participants'
thinking and actions.

Nomination Process
Candidates must be nominated by a participant/alumnus of the BTMH Program.
We invite all BTMH participants and graduates to nominate candidates to
receive this unique honour. Important Dates for 2014: Nominations are to be
submitted electronically and are due on September 8, 2014 at 3:00 PM, and
awards will be presented on the evening of September 30, 2014.
To nominate a candidate, BTMH participants/alumni must complete the
Nomination Form outlining the reasons for the nomination, and giving specific
examples and stories.
Nominations will be kept confidential, but nominees chosen as award recipients
will be informed of their nomination and of the participant that nominated
them. Participants will be asked to introduce their nominees at the BTMH
Graduation Ceremony. The award recipients will be asked to speak about the
impact of the award for them personally and the value of mentoring in their
own careers.
Nominations are judged by the selection committee to be prime examples of
what it means to truly serve as a mentor. The committee reserves the right not to
allocate an award for a particular cohort where, in their opinion, there are no
entries of sufficient merit.
The sole criterion for the awards is excellence in mentoring. To guide participants
in their nomination, the following are examples of the qualities and practices
that can contribute to excellence in mentoring. They are listed in no particular
order of importance and a mentor need not display all:


FAQ’s
Will my supervisor know that I nominated him/her? Will my supervisor know that I
didn't nominate him/her?
No, all nominations will be kept strictly confidential. Although we hope that
participants will want to inform their supervisors that they have been nominated,
the BTMH Program will not do so. Participants are strongly encouraged to invite
their mentors to the Graduation Ceremony, but only award recipients will be
specifically invited by the Committee. Your name will not be attached to any
nomination without your consent, but if your nominee is chosen as the award
recipient, s/he will be told who nominated her/him.
