Graduate Assistantship Information
Announcement of Graduate Assistantship Openings:
The George Washington University Department of Exercise Science is pleased to announce several Graduate
Assistantship openings. All applicants to the School of Public Health and Health Services (SPHHS) Master of Science in
Exercise Science (MSES) are invited to apply. Students must be accepted to SPHHS in addition to applying for the
Graduate Assistantship. Master of Public Health Physical Activity in Public Health (MPH-PA) students are not eligible for
Graduate Assistantships in the Department of Exercise Science.
Graduate Assistantship Positions
Graduate Assistantship assignments are made based on the applicant’s qualifications and the department’s needs.
1. Exercise Physiology Labs
Familiarity with exercise testing and fitness assessment protocols; possess and maintains technical skills and
competencies that are required to operate all of the laboratory equipment (exercise testing systems (including
electrocardiographic monitoring), treadmills, cycle and arm ergometers, gas analysis systems, pulmonary function
testing, blood analyzers, and body composition analysis systems).
 Teach undergraduate and graduate exercise physiology labs
 Conduct, under supervision, sub-maximal and maximal exercise tests (fitness and clinical)
 Calibrate equipment, as needed
 Troubleshoot technical problems with the equipment and coordinate necessary equipment repairs
 Order necessary laboratory supplies and maintain the required inventory of supplies
2. Undergraduate Applied Anatomy/Physiology Labs
 Conduct labs that stimulate students to learn more about anatomy and physiology in an active, applied
learning environment
 Administer tests that assure reliable and valid measurement of students’ knowledge
 Schedule regular office hours and open lab hours to assist students who may need additional help
3. Kinesiology Labs
 Conduct labs that stimulate students to learn more about kinesiology and biomechanics in an active, applied
learning environment
 Administer tests that assure reliable and valid measurement of students’ knowledge
 Schedule regular office hours and open lab hours to assist students who may need additional help
4. Research
 Assist faculty in all aspects of laboratory and community-based research, including data collection, data entry,
data analysis, literature reviews, manuscript writing, budgets, maintenance of study records, and preparing
research proposals
5. Injury Care, Prevention and Assessment Labs (ATC required)
 Teach undergraduate care, prevention, and assessment of injury labs in an active, applied learning
environment
 Administer tests that assure reliable and valid measurement of students’ knowledge
 Schedule regular office hours and open lab hours to assist students who may need additional help
6. Lifestyle, Sport and Physical Activity Program
 Instruct activity classes
 Assist program director

Graduate Assistantship Application Process
Application Process:
Step 1. Apply and be accepted as a MSES student in the SPHHS
Please contact the SPHHS Office of Recruitment and Admissions for an SPHHS Admissions
Application and information about the two MSES academic concentrations, Clinical Exercise
Physiology and Strength and Conditioning. Competitive applicants will have earned a bachelors
degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum grade point average of 3.2/4.0 scale.
The Admissions Application Instructions outline the materials that you are required to submit and the
admissions application deadlines for each semester.

Step 2. Apply for a Graduate Assistantship
Once you are accepted into the School of Public Health and Health Services, you may submit the
Graduate Assistantship (GA) Application. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis beginning
January 15, preceding the academic year in which the award is made. Full time Graduate Assistants
receive annual tuition benefits for 18 semester credits and receive an additional $8000 to help defray
the costs of housing and other expenses. Part time Graduate Assistants receive annual tuition
benefits for 9 semester credits and receive an additional $4000 to help defray the costs of housing
and other expenses.
