LEEDS METROPOLITAN UNIVERSITY Faculty Research Committee - Constitution 2010/11 Terms of Reference 1 The Faculty Research Committee is responsible to the Faculty Academic Board for general issues relating to research in the Faculty. 2 The Faculty Research Committee’s terms of reference are to: (a) promote the development of a research culture in the Faculty; (b) advise the Faculty Academic Board on the strategic development of research, knowledge exchange, and related activities in the Faculty and on the development and implementation of a Faculty research plan aligned to the University research strategy; (c) oversee the experience of research students in the Faculty; (d) oversee the provision of research awards in the Faculty; (e) consider such other matters as may be referred to it by the University Research Sub-Committee, the Dean, or the Faculty Academic Board. Delegated Authority 3 The Faculty Research Committee has authority to: (a) make recommendations to the Faculty Academic Board regarding strategic action plans for research, knowledge exchange, and related activities; (b) receive reports on the progress of candidates for research awards and make decisions regarding their progression, or the amendment or termination of their registration; (c) receive annual reports from Research Awards Coordinators and make recommendations to the Dean, as appropriate; (d) recommend to the Faculty Academic Board approval of the Faculty’s annual report on research activity for submission to the University Research Committee; (e) approve the payment of writing up fees for MPhil and PhD candidates; 4 5 (f) approve requests from candidates for the suspension of their registration for research awards; (g) approve applications from candidates for theses to remain confidential after completion; (h) make decisions, as required, in disputes over the supervision of candidates for research degrees; (i) make decisions, as required, in instances where a research student does not accept the options offered in respect of confirmation of registration ; (j) make decisions in instances where, at the request of a research student, a decision not to approve a transfer of registration is referred to the Committee [A6.3.5]; (k) approve examiners’ recommendations directing students to make minor modifications to, make substantive amendments to, or resubmit, a thesis; The Faculty Research Committee shall consider and refer the following matters to the University Research Sub-Committee: (a) recommendations for the conferment of awards; (b) recommendations regarding examination arrangements; (c) decisions in instances where a member of staff registered for a research degree wishes to supervise students in the same field. The Faculty Research Committee shall refer to the Registrar and Secretary and the Chair of the University Research Sub-Committee recommendations in respect of non-standard entry qualifications. Reporting line 6 The Faculty Research Committee reports to the Faculty Academic Board. In addition, it makes reports to the committees and sub-committees of Academic Board, as required. Delegation 7 The functions of the Faculty Research Committee will not normally be delegated further. Membership 8 9 Faculty Research Committees should not normally exceed 15 members and must include: (a) the Chair, nominated by the Dean; (b) Associate Dean for Research / Director of Research / Research Manager or equivalent; (c) Research Administrator; (d) Research Award Coordinators (up to five representatives); (e) up to five nominees of the subject group / academic unit leaders; (f) up to two members external to the Faculty. Terms of office should normally be three years. Deviations from the draft model constitution for Faculty Research Committee Membership for Faculty of Health & Social Sciences Research Committee: Academic Board approved at its meeting on 08 November 2010 that the constitution of the Faculty of Health & Social Sciences Research Committee would be amended to increase the maximum permissible number of subject group/academic unit leaders from eight to ten until August 2011 at which point the maximum would reduce in total again to eight. Membership for Carnegie Faculty Research Committee: Request to amend 8e) to read: 8 (e) one nominee from each subject group This amendment means that there would be eight subject group leaders represented as members.
