Summary Humanities in Local Community Colleges, Colleges and Universities Preface: The following summary examines the humanities programs and courses as they are offered in the community colleges and local colleges and universities within the area where UCF maintains branch campuses: Marion, Lake, Sumter, Osceola, Orange, Seminole, Brevard and Volusia Counties. Community colleges there include Central Florida (Ocala, Inverness), Lake-Sumter (Leesburg, Clermont, Sumterville), Valencia (Orlando, Kissimmee), Brevard (Cocoa, Palm Bay) and Volusia (Daytona, Deland). The private colleges and universities include Rollins College, Winter Park; Stetson University, Deland; and Florida Southern College, Lakeland. Stetson has a historic connection with the Southern Baptist Convention though it is now independent. Florida Southern College has an ongoing connection to the United Methodist Church. Private Institutions 1. Rollins College, Winter Park - Rollins has a Humanities Department which houses divisions of Religion, Philosophy, Classics, European Studies, English and Foreign Languages. There are no interdisciplinary undergraduate courses designated as Humanities but the major/minor for the various areas of studies above fall under the umbrella Humanities Department. In its Masters of Liberal Studies program, graduate interdisciplinary courses are offered with MLS prefixes. Courses such as "Religion and Western Culture" and "Origins of Modernity" are more in keeping with the interdisciplinary humanities approach. 2. Stetson University, Deland - From the Humanities Program website, the following description: The Humanities Program is not a conventional department, but an interdisciplinary program offering a major and a minor as well as supporting the general education needs of the University. While the Program does offer courses of its own under the HUM designation, majors and minors complete most of their work through the Humanities Division of the College of Arts and Sciences, and in some cases through the School of Music and through cultural studies offerings of other divisions and programs. Stetson offers four courses with specific HUM prefixes along with two Honors Humanities courses. The bulk of major and minor coursework is taken from American Studies, Latin American Studies, music, languages, religion and European History. 3. Florida Southern College, Lakeland - Florida Southern has a "Humanities Divisional Major" which allows for an interdisciplinary approach with particular emphases in art, communication, English, modern languages, music, philosophy, religion or theater. The college offers no courses with the HUM prefix. Community Colleges 1. Valencia Community College Valencia offers a pre-major in Humanities pursuant to the A.A. transfer degree. It requires the Introduction to Humanities, HUM 1020, which is jokingly described as "From the Stone Age to the Space Age," a non-Gordon Rule survey course designed to 1. expose students to the Humanities and 2. help them decide which further specialized Humanities course(s) they will take for degree requirements. The pre-major requires the HUM 1020 plus four 2000 level Humanities courses, the latter of which are designed to meet Gordon Rule credit ranging from Classical Humanities (Greeks/Romans) to 20th Century Humanities. Asian and Latin American Humanities are offered as well. All students who seek an A.A. transfer degree must take three HUM courses, two of which are 2000 (Gordon Rule) level. The college strongly encourages freshmen to take the 1020 intro class. Most if not all A.S. or A.A.S. programs require a single three unit course in Humanities as a part of their Foundational requirements.
