HUMANITIES AT THE SANDON SCHOOL The Humanities Curriculum area consists of three subjects: Geography, History and Religious Education. Each has its own Subject Leader, who is responsible to the Curriculum Team Leader. There are, at present, nine full time members of staff in the team and two part-time. The department is located in a two floor block at the front of the school. This area consists of eight classrooms. The Humanities Team has its own staff work room. The area has recently been refurbished and each of the classrooms contains interactive whiteboards and data projectors. The three subjects are taught separately across all Key Stages by a team of subject specialists. As Humanities subjects they are linked by an understanding of: The human environment The human past Human ideas and behaviour The subjects are also linked by shared approaches to teaching and learning. There are regular team meetings to discuss and share good practice as well as to look at ways in which student learning can be improved. As such, there is a strong commitment to collaborative practice which any successful candidate is encouraged to participate towards. The successful candidate will also have a desire to develop and use ICT in their teaching and it is anticipated that they will be issued with a ‘lap top’ computer to support this aim. In addition, any successful candidate should be keen to develop and use a wide variety of teaching and learning styles. The department prides itself on the excellent relationships built with students and, as a result of this, Humanities is a very popular department across the school. Alongside strong examination results, the Humanities team has an important role to play in the whole school curriculum. Subjects encourage students to formulate their own values, attitudes and judgements to a range of issues. It is the hope that all students are encouraged to develop an enquiring mind as well as to deepen their understanding of the world that they live in.
