AHRC-FUNDED THREE YEAR PHD STUDENTSHIP IN ENGLISH LITERATURE OR
LINGUISTICS
Applications are invited by the Graduate School of Arts, Education and Humanities at
Bangor University for an AHRC PhD Studentship in English Literature or Linguistics
beginning on 1st October 2011. This award will support research in designated areas in
which the two Schools of English (Literature) and Linguistics have world-leading
expertise.
Applications are invited from potential researchers who wish to pursue a programme of
research leading to a PhD in one of the following four areas: i) Bilingualism, ii)
Cognitive Linguistics, iii) Arthurian studies or iv) Welsh writing in English. The
School of Linguistics boasts world-leading researchers in the areas of Bilingualism and
Cognitive Linguistics, while the School of English is well-known internationally for its
established expertise in Arthurian Studies and Welsh writing in English. However,
students wishing to work on other aspects of English Literature, English Linguistics or
comparative studies are also encouraged to apply, as these Schools offer research
expertise ranging across the breadth of both academic disciplines. Further information

Eligibility
Applicants should hold a distinguished academic record, which will include a Bachelor
Degree (or equivalent) and preferably will also include the award of, or current study
for, a Masters degree or relevant professional experience. Applicants must have a native
or near-native command of English, and be able to demonstrate the aptitude to
successfully complete a PhD by research within the period of the award. Full-time
Doctoral students who qualify for the full AHRC studentship will have their tuition
fees paid for and will receive a stipend of £13,590 p.a. AHRC awards are open to UK
and to EU applicants. Please be aware that EU applicants may qualify for a fees-only

Application Procedure
The application deadline is 5pm on Friday 1st July 2011 and interviews will be held
later in July or early August. Applicants *must* apply using the University's
Postgraduate On-Line Application Form available here.

challenges ahead, and
(iii) whether or not you are applying to other institutions with an AHRC BGP (if so,
please state the name of the institution or institutions).
