Summer Assignment Each year the English Department at Tully High School puts together a summer reading program for all students 7-12. This summer all incoming 7th grade girls will be responsible for reading Call me Hope by Gretchen Olson. The incoming 7th grade boys will be responsible for reading Swindle by Gordon Korman. You will then complete a newsletter assignment that will be handed in for a test grade in September. The good news is you can work by yourself or you can work with a partner. If you work with a partner both names must be printed on the bylines. No more than two people can work on the project. Newsletter You are to make a one page 8 ½ by 11 newsletter that has topics which relate to the novel you are reading. The articles can be about any events that took place in the story, about any character in the story, or about any event that happened in American History that ties in with the story. It can be hand written or done by computer. It should have a catchy title, date, byline (your name), cartoon or pictures, and at least 4 articles. Grammar and spelling will count! This newsletter is set up as an example to follow, but you can set yours up any way you wish. Be Creative! Here is a chance for you to take your time and start out the year with a good grade. Grading Rubric A rubric used for grading the newsletter is on the back of this paper. This will show you exactly how I am going to grade this assignment. It breaks down all the parts and how I will grade them. If you have questions email me during the summer at mmagnan@tully.k12.ny.us Getting the Book Mrs. Magnan will have some copies of Swindle and Call me Hope in the main office of the High School for you to sign out. You can get copies at the Tully Free Library through interlibrary loan. You can also purchase the book at Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble, and Walden books.
