Resources
VTB worksheets, excel resources
Aspects of National Curriculum Frame Work to be covered.
Constructing and solving linear equations with integer coefficients. Pg
122 - 125
Lesson context/focus:
Focus is on constructing linear equations from given data and then solving
the equation.
Misconceptions
Pupils must make sure that when constructing the equations they put the
correct functions in the correct positions and use brackets efficiently.
Learning Objectives:
To be able to construct and solve linear equations that involve negatives,
brackets and unknowns on both sides.
Structure of lesson
Starter : Put this problem on the board.
The length of a rectangle is three times its width. Its perimeter is 24cm.
What is the length of the width in cm’s?
Leave the pupils a few minutes to work in pairs discussing how to come by
the answer.
Some will attempt it by trial and error but the aim of this lesson is to try
and construct an equation that can be solved using this information.
If students are struggling suggest a diagram and try to label the sides
using the information given.
The key point is to try and create an equation. We know the perimeter is
24 so automatically we can write 24 = ?
The width we can label ‘ w ‘ and we know the length is three times the
width hence 3w = 3w
Therefore 24 = 3w + 3w + w + w
24 = 8w
w = 3.
(10mins)
Main : Worksheet Ma38B006 is a good introduction to forming equations
without words but with commands. The pupils should make sure that they
actually solve the equation after forming it in order to get full marks.
(20 mins)
Pupils should then attempt worksheet Ma36B011 which moves onto
forming equations with words. Qu 1-12 have a good variety of questions
where pupils must allocate algebraic symbols for products in order to
form the equation. (25 mins)
Plenary : This should be a discussion with the teacher about the last 2
lessons and a reminder of what has been covered. The teacher should ask
the pupils to explain the differences and meanings of equations,
functions, identities, and formulae. (5 mins)
Extension : The more able pupils should attempt worksheet Ma38C005
where there are two sets of equations that need solving simultaneously
and can be linked in with graphical representation. In this way the pupils
can solve them in two different ways.
