SCARGILL JUNIOR SCHOOL Spring Term Newsletter 2011 Dear Parents It is hard to believe we are already half way through this term, and in fact half way through this academic year. I.C.T Awards Having been awarded the Education Business award for ICT Innovation in November, we have recently been informed that we have been shortlisted for the NAACE Impact Award for ICT; the winners will be announced in March. We are all keeping our fingers crossed! Ocean Maths This is a maths programme, designed to help parents and children have fun together whilst learning and which proved to be very successful last year. We are introducing it to year 4 this week and hope to continue with year 5 after half term. In addition Mrs Gleeson will run some parent workshops to support you with the different methods we use in school to teach maths. Please refer to the diary dates to find out when. International Week International Week has been extremely successful and lots of fun. Each class has learnt about a different country including Scotland, Wales, Sri Lanka, Canada, United Arab Emirates. The children have experienced African Drumming and Belly Dancing , as well as food tasting and learning how to speak in a new language. The whole experience will finish with our “Round the World” day on Friday where the children visit different countries throughout the day. Reminders School Uniform Boots can be worn during severe weather but it is expected that children will change into alternative footwear in school. Fleeces are not allowed unless they are Scargill Junior School fleeces. Please ensure that your child has an appropriate coat to wear outside. Thank you for your continuing support for the school uniform. The children all look extremely smart. Head lice Head lice are a perpetual problem for schools in general. Please check your child’s hair daily for signs of eggs or lice. Tying long hair up and daily combing of hair can help significantly. There are several products available from chemists, which get rid of head lice quickly and effectively. Attendance Please find attached a leaflet regarding the school policy on attendance. Although many of you do try to take holidays outside of term time, I would like to remind you that absence during the term which is not illness, will be unauthorised, and in some cases this may mean a financial penalty.
