SJB SCIENCE DEPARTMENT: JUNIOR CLASSROOM POLICIES
Students are expected to be in class on time
2.
Students must come to class prepared
3.
Students will be assigned a number text that must be returned by the end of the course. The student must return the specific
text that they were assigned. Failure to do so will require payment.
4.
Teachers may refuse student requests to leave the classroom. Students must ensure that they have all their necessary
materials, and take bathroom breaks during appropriate times
5.
You must be in full uniform
6.
Homework must be completed each day. Teachers may perform random homework checks, and your performance can be
reflected in your report card
7.
Students are expected to keep track of concepts that are causing them difficulty and are expected to seek help ON THEIR
OWN before major assessments. Help labs are available every week for students
8.
The teacher reserves the right to refuse offer extra help to those students who habitually fail to pay attention in class
9.
All assignments must be handed in on time. Late assignments can be penalized 5% per day from day 1 until 2. An
attempt to hand in the assignment on Day 3 will result in a grade of ZERO. Assignments submitted after an
assignment has been marked and returned WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
10. If a student misses a test, a signed note is required from the parent/guardian the day the student returns and the test
will be written on the first day of their return. If this is not possible, it is THEIR responsibility to schedule a date for
a re-take. If the student fails to do so before the test is returned, they will receive a zero on the test. Students that are
absent without consent will receive a zero on the test.
11. If a student knows they will be absent on a due date or a test date, it is their responsibility to make alternative arrangements
with the teacher BEFORE the date that they are absent.
12. If a student is absent from class, it is their responsibility to catch up on notes, assignments, or any other information
delivered that day. “I DID NOT KNOW” is not an acceptable excuse
13. Classroom behaviour is based on respect and consideration for everyone – teachers and students are included. When the
teacher is talking – everyone listens. Nothing else is acceptable.
14. Bring to class a three ring binder with separated into units, using dividers.
15. Tests will be previously announced, but quizzes can be given at any time
16. During class, listen. The teacher may not write everything on the board. Note taking is an important skill which must be
practiced especially if a student is advancing to college and university. Feel free to stop the teacher if you need something
clarified.
17. Regular attendance is important. Missing one class means that a student will miss a lot of information as well as
assessments. School administration reserves the right to adjust the marks based on questionable student attendance.
18. Labs are an important part of a science education. For safety reasons, students are expected to follow the lab safety rules
outlined. Lab safety is always reviewed at the start of every class. A student can receive a mark of zero on a lab if they are
not allowed to participate due to inappropriate behaviour.
19. In addition to report cards, marks are regularly updated and communicated to students and parents via progress reports or
postings in the classroom EVERY MONTH
20. Eating, drinking and chewing gum are not allowed in classrooms or labs. ALL ELECTRONIC DEVICES SUCH AS CELL
PHONES AND IPODS (BUT NOT LIMITED TO) ARE NOT PERMITTED IN CLASS.
General Laboratory Rules: Laboratory Safety Contract
1. Students must think before doing anything in the laboratory
2. Students are to maintain quiet behaviour during lab periods. Never rush. Always be
prepared to stop quickly.
3. Students must have a written procedure for any experiment to be done in the laboratory.
4. Students must know the location and use of safety equipment in the classroom (fire
extinguisher, fire blanket, eyewash station)
5. Students must clean their lab table at the end of the laboratory session.
6. Students are not to eat, drink, or chew gum while working in the laboratory.
7. During all experiments, students must wear safety goggles.
8. Contact lenses are not to be worn during some experiments. Contact lens wearing students who do not have
regular glasses must be observers, not experimenters, for those experiments.
9. Shoes must be worn during all experiments.
10. Long hair must be tied back during experiments.
11. Chemicals are never to be taken from the laboratory.
12. Unauthorized experiments are strictly prohibited.
13. Horseplay in the laboratory is strictly prohibited.
14. Accidents of any kind must be reported immediately to the teacher.
15. Students must keep their laboratory stations clean and all unused equipment properly stored at all times.
16. Waste chemicals are to be disposed of in the containers provided.
17. Solids are not to be discarded in the sink.
18. Only waste paper is to be put in garbage cans.
19. Broken equipment (glass test tubes, etc) must be reported to the teacher immediately.
20. All acid solutions must be neutralized before putting them into the waste chemical container.
21. Students are never to work alone in the lab or touch any chemicals or equipment set up by another class or
teacher.
22. Students are to avoid inhaling chemical fumes.
23. Never taste or touch chemicals.
24. Consider all chemicals to be hazardous and read labels carefully. Use a scoopula to remove chemicals from the
container. Take only the amount needed and replace the lid.
25. Do not return excess chemicals to their original containers unless otherwise instructed to do so by your teacher.
26. Never point a test tube at anyone during an experiment.
27. Never add water to acids or hot water to bases.
28. Never leave a Bunsen burner flame unattended. One partner should stay with the experiment. Turn the burner
off if you do not need to use it anymore.
29. Never carry hot equipment from one desk to another. The most common injury is a burn caused by touching
objects that have been heated. Hot glass looks the same as cold glass.
30. Students do not have the right to jeopardize the safety and well-being of others.
Failure to comply with the above rules may result in a student’s temporary or permanent loss of laboratory
privileges and certain classroom privileges. Such a strict procedure will be followed in order to avoid any possible
injury to the student in question, injury to others, or damage to school property. It is important to realize that any removal
of privileges will also result in an unavoidable reduction in laboratory marks.
