NUR 140 LPN to RN Career Mobility
Pediatric Competency Evaluation
I.
Goal: Competencies of registered nurse graduates will be improved in the areas of child
health, maternal health, and electronic medical records.
II.
Objective: The LPN to RN Jackson State graduates will have training competencies of no less
than 80% in pediatric care.
Upon successful completion of this clinical experience, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge and skill in assessment, nursing intervention, and evaluation for
selected simulated pediatric illnesses
- Demonstrate understanding of developmental traits in the design of nursing care for
selected simulated pediatric patients
- Demonstrate safe nursing practice and decision making skills in the care of selected
simulated pediatric patients
III.
Method of Evaluation of Pediatric Competency:
1. Satisfactory clinical rating
2. Satisfactory demonstration of nursing care of simulated pediatric client, including
satisfactory case simulation check off
3. Passing score on national standardized pediatric exam (HESI)
1. Satisfactory Clinical Rating:
Successful demonstration of nursing care of actual pediatric clients through completion of
a three day pediatric clinical rotation in a hospital setting.
Evaluation tool: Nursing 140 Clinical Evaluation Tool.
2. Satisfactory Pediatric Clinical Simulation Lab:
a. Successful demonstration of nursing care of simulated pediatric client through
completion of one selected case study. Pediatric simulated cases include:
- A toddler with increased intracranial pressure and a seizure
- A preschool child with an acute asthma attack
- A school age child with acute appendicitis
- An infant with gastroenteritis and dehydration
- An adolescent with hypoglycemia and insulin-dependent diabetes
b. “Satisfactory” rating of nursing skills demonstrated in treatment of simulated
pediatric client.
Evaluation tool: Pediatric simulation skills check-off tool.
3. National Standardized Pediatric Exam (HESI):
a. Student must achieve passing score of 74.5% or above
