FEBRUARY 2016 Newsletter IN THE ROWE GALLERY: Collected Treasures Jan 23 – Feb 27 2+2+2 Mar 12 – Apr 22 Clair Hardy May 14 - June 24 Collected Treasures Closing Reception Saturday, February 27, 2016 2-4pm Final Bidding!!! Notes from the President – Renie Pollock PHYLLIS JEAN WALTERS – I got a sneak peek at the Featured Artist wall that was given to our talented member, Phyllis jean Walters, as an added bonus to our prizewinner from the juried exhibit this past summer. These works are even better than her winning show piece. If you appreciate local scenes, especially those including horses, you are in for a real treat. We also are fortunate enough to be exhibiting the works of 2 up and coming high school students - Sarah Thomas from Greensburg Salem High School and Jourdan Jeffries from Hempfield High School. We wish these two the best as they pursue a promising future with their art. MEMBER SILENT AUCTION – COLLECTED TREASURES - I thought Snowflake Showcase was a complicated show to put together but this event rivals even that. For those of you who decided to liquidate some of your art, jewelry, and collectibles that just don’t fit anymore, this is a prime opportunity for the rest of us to enrich our own collections or begin to pull your own personal collection together at unbelievable prices. One painting was sold the day it was brought in and never even made it to the walls! MAKE A POINT OF GETTING IN AND PLACING YOUR SILENT AUCTION BID ON YOUR FAVORITES BEFORE THE LAST DAY. Actually, on the last day Saturday, February 27 from 2 pm – 4 pm there will be a special closing reception with refreshments during you can see if you need to add to your bid price to be the winner of your chosen pieces. There’s so much to pick from – large and small, realistic to abstract in a wide range of mediums and prices, many widely recognized names in art. And some of the loveliest vintage jewelry and big name pottery, many at half price. You can’t afford to miss this!!! ABOVE AND BEYOND THE CALL OF MEMBERSHIP - Don Pollock is well on the way to proving that I picked a pretty good husband as he and his friend Bob Moreland got our new fire door in, built shelves in the gallery and kitchen and even painted it all. John Bixler rerouted our electrical conduits for the new door, and in his spare time, caught the red squirrel that has been inhabiting our building and removed it to a safe place far, far away. Ed Gross is incorporating extra shelves into our AED wall at the monitor’s desk so that items can be arranged in a more orderly and tidy fashion. Nancy Dalverny and Rose Sovyak suffered through working with epoxy enamel to give a tough paint finish to our classroom tables and gallery bar. Pat Majcher was busy doing her favorite thing – purging and organizing the classroom. Now all Gallery related materials are ACTUALLY IN THE GALLERY and the classroom materials are ACTUALLY IN THE CLASSROOM – WHAT A CONCEPT!!! It was a successful reorganization effort that warmed my heart despite the cold winter. And… drum roll, please, Pat Majcher has added a new accomplishment to her resume and wrote the most recent grant that has been submitted to the Westmoreland Foundation. She stepped right in and made a really impressive effort to bring our classroom up to a higher level of technology with input from Sue White and Barb Weiser. Great collaboration. CONGRATULATIONS, KUDOS, HIP HIP HOORAY, AND ALL THAT GOOD STUFF – I heard that Gordon Sarti’s show at the Greensburg Library is a beauty to behold. The metallic paper that he uses for his photographs elevate the ordinary to extraordinary. If you haven’t made it there, make a point of it to brighten these dark days. My apologies to Gordon as I called him during the event and told him that our son’s dog that we were babysitting had other ideas for us. REMINDER – IF YOU HAVE ANY NEWS ABOUT SHOWS THAT YOU ARE IN OR HAVE WON ANY AWARDS, PLEASE LET ME KNOW. ART ON THE VINE – If you’re still finding small pieces of art that you want to give renewed life to, we’ll be collecting pieces of art for the art auction that will accompany this annual wine tasting event. Pieces are to be no larger than 16” x 20” but preferably smaller than that. You can donate existing pieces or brand new. We will provide the framing if need be. I would like to have all the pieces together by March 20 so that I can handle the framing and cataloguing. If you need substrates on which to paint brand new images just email me as soon as possible… reniepollock@gmail.com. This year’s event has the added bonus of allowing us to purchase our favorite wines on site that we discover that night during the tasting experience. Every year just gets better and better. AND TILL NEXT NEWSLETTER… KEEP WARM! Next meeting: February 8 Since the first bidding day (yesterday) AND THE SECOND BIDDING DAY (Feb.7th then 6th) have BOTH been cancelled, the bidding will be done anytime bidders stop into the Gallery before the final day ( Feb. 27th). The latest version is always available on the web at www.greensburgartcenter.org WE’RE LOOKING FOR NEW MONITORS !!! We have permanent monitors who take the same day every month...like the 1st. Tues. 10AM to 1PM or the 3rd Friday 1PM to 4PM. If a monitor does not want to commit to a certain day every month, I put them on the "fill-in " list and call each of them every month to see which of the remaining days they are willing to take. Once in awhile, a permanent monitor is unable to take his/her shift so I see if any of the other permanent monitors are willing to trade. If that is not possible, I contact the monitors on the "fill in" list to see if any of them can take that shift. The permanent monitors have signed up for one, two or three shifts a month. Some of the "fill in" monitors also sign up for more than one day, though most do a single shift....which is fine. I am presently training new monitors to share the work, since some of the regulars have had to quit due to health problems, or are unavailable for a month or two at a time. The monitors are the members who keep GAC open on a day to day basis! Let me know which days you are available for training and we'll get you scheduled. Thanks for being willing to help.
