Program Objectives The program is specially designed for Occupational Therapists to advance their professional competency in the provision of specialized interventions to patients with mental health conditions / problems. Upon completion of program, participants should be: - Able to utilize critical clinical reasoning skills to enhance clinical judgment and decision making in mental health service; - Capable to apply advanced knowledge and skills to different mental health conditions; - Competent to deliver highly specialized Occupational Therapy interventions to patients with highly complex mental health conditions; and - Proficient to improve the quality of care for patients with mental health conditions. The Advanced Specialty Program is a three-year program that will operate in modular format. The notional learning hours of each module comprises three components: - Lecture / Theory - Work-based / Experiential Learning - Other Learning Activities Work-based / Experiential Learning It entails the practice of skills learned, utilization of newly acquired skills in clinical practice and in-service training. Log book will be provided to register the category and number of clinical cases done and countersigned by supervisor of candidate. Record of in-service training will also be required for submission. Assistant Clinical Professor, Department of Psychiatry, University of California – San Diego School of Medicine Target participants: Practice as an Occupational Therapist for at least 5 years with minimal 3 years post-graduate working experience in managing mental health conditions Course Objectives 1. Educate on the nature of insomnia and other sleep problems commonly encountered with primary and tertiary care treatment clinics. 2. Educate on the cognitive behavioral model of insomnia. 3. Develop skills to 3.1 detect and assess insomnia and other sleep problems; 3.2 provide cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia; and 3.3 collaborate with various other providers who provide treatment for patients with insomnia and other sleep problems. Learning Outcomes On completion of the course, occupational therapists will be able to: 1. detect common sleep problems observed in patients in primary and tertiary care; 2. understand the cognitive behavioral model of insomnia; 3. demonstrate basic clinical skills needed to provide cognitive behavioral therapy; 4. assess the needs of patients with insomnia; 5. structure cognitive behavioral treatment sessions for patients with insomnia; and 6. communicate effectively with other treatment providers regarding evaluation and treatment of sleep problems. Assessment will be made on a “pass/fail” basis by the trainer for the following activities : 1.1 In-class written assessment 1.2 In-class group project: Case presentation of an adult patient with chronic insomnia and a segment of a role-play with the patient. 2.
