JOB DESCRIPTION
Deputy Headteacher, Fulltime Teacher and SEN coordinator, Based at Ysgol Tanyfron
Job Purpose





To make strategic evaluations of teaching, learning, and personnel issues as a supportive
and well-motivated team member.

General Responsibilities










Oversee all aspects of the school organisation and management, including
preparing agendas and chairing meetings, in order to ensure that school policies and
practices are being delivered.
Take some responsibility for the pastoral care of pupils, including involvement in organising
when necessary.
Co-ordinate and oversee the organisation of out of school learning activities.
Liaise closely with all staff to ensure continuity and progression across the age and
ability range.
Monitor the standards of behaviour and achievement across the key stage.
Help set appropriate expectations for staff and pupils in relation to standards of pupil's
achievements and the quality of teaching, establishing clear targets for improving
and sustaining pupils' achievement supporting the process of teaching and learning
in accordance with agreed policies and guidelines.
Supporting staff to meet personal and professional targets.
Ensure staff share the aims of the school in promoting a high quality of learning in
the classroom.
Lead by example as a teacher and as a manager, achieving high standards of pupil
attainment, behaviour and motivation through effective teaching.
Play a major role under the overall direction of the head teacher in generating vision, ethos and policies for the
Federation which promote high levels of achievement and meet equality objectives;

A
Planning, teaching and class management

To have a full time teaching commitment, ensuring lessons are adequately planned and that work is regularly
marked.
Teach allocated pupils by planning their teaching to achieve progression of learning through:









Identifying clear teaching objectives and specifying how they will be taught and assessed;
Setting tasks which challenge pupils and ensure high levels of interest;
Setting appropriate and demanding expectations;
Setting clear targets, building on prior attainment;
Identifying SEN or very able pupils;
Provide clear structures for lessons maintaining pace, motivation and challenge;
Make effective use of assessment and ensure coverage of programmes of study;
Ensure effective teaching and best use of available time;
Monitor and intervene to ensure sound learning and discipline;
Use a variety of teaching methods to:






Match approach to content, structure information, present a set of key ideas and use appropriate vocabulary;
Use effective questioning, listen carefully to pupils, give attention to errors and misconceptions;
Select appropriate learning resources and develop study skills through library, I.C.T. and other
sources;
Ensure pupils acquire and consolidate knowledge, skills and understanding appropriate to the subject taught;
Critically evaluate their own teaching to improve effectiveness.
Monitoring, assessment, recording, and reporting





Assess how well learning objectives have been achieved and use them to improve specific aspects of
teaching;
Mark and monitor pupils' work and set targets for progress;
Assess and record pupils' progress systematically and keep records to check work is understood and
completed, monitor strengths and weaknesses, inform planning and recognise the level at which the pupil is
achieving and
Prepare and present informative reports to parents.
Other professional requirements








Have a working knowledge of teachers' professional duties and legal liabilities;
Ensure the Health and Safety procedures are met.
Develop a robust Educational Visits system.
Establish effective working relationships and set a good example through their presentation and personal and
professional conduct;
Endeavour to give every child the opportunity to reach their potential and meet high expectations;
Take responsibility for their own professional development and duties in relation to schools policies and
practices;
Liase effectively with parents and governors and take on any additional responsibilities which might from time
to time be determined.
Management Responsibility










Take responsibility for the overall running of the school in the long term absence of the Headteacher.
Travel between sites if needed.
Assist the Headteacher with collating timetables
Lead the school and staff in the following areas:
o Mathematics
Welsh
o Music
Oversee that all duty rotas are carried out by the respective members of staff.
Take responsibility, In conjunction with the Headteacher, for the general discipline and conduct of the school.
Take responsibility for conducting regular school assemblies.
Organise and help run the Sports Day and similar events.
Oversee regular changes of displays within the school.
Help with ‘Urdd’ activities within the school.










Take responsibility for preparing and collating requisitions
Oversee the development of a teacher resource area and other areas in the school.
Take responsibility for support staff appraisal.
Act as a Teacher Governor (If Elected)
Develop links with other schools.
Support the Headteacher in developing positive working relationships with and between all staff and provide
and sustain motivation;
Mentor NQT/EPD staff members when required
Lead groups of staff in developmental activities, delegate appropriately and evaluate outcomes;
Act as ‘critical friend’ and provide effective professional challenge and support to the Headteacher;
Curriculum Responsibility
Lead and manage Mathematics, Design and Technology and Welsh 2nd Language in the Federation










Contribute to the formation of the School Improvement Plan and Quality Development Statement (for named
areas of the curriculum).
Audit/order resources.
Keep up-to-date with the latest teaching and learning and assessment of the different areas.
Monitor the quality of teaching and learning in subject areas.
Attend relevant INSET (to link with the SIP).
Assist with the provision of any INSET for our teaching staff (for named subjects).
Offer support and advice to colleagues (for named subjects).
Prepare initial drafts of necessary paperwork (e.g. Policy Document) for the named subjects.
Attend Senior Management Meetings and Governing Body Meetings (as required to report/feedback
information relating to named subjects.
Keep the Link Governor for specialist subjects up-to-date on curriculum developments and initiatives for
named subjects
This position is subject to the current conditions of employment of teachers contained in the School Teachers’ Pay and
Conditions Document 2009 (see Section 2, Part 10, Part 12), the Education Act 2002, the required standards for
Assistant Head teacher and Qualified Teacher Status, other current educational legislation and the school’s articles of
government.
This job description may be amended at any time following discussion between the Headteacher and member of staff,
and will be reviewed annually.
