Overview:
The UHCW trauma fellowship is aimed at orthopaedic surgeons who
have completed or are near completion of their training and are
planning a career involving care of the critically injured patient.
UHCW is the second busiest adult Major Trauma Centre in the UK
allowing extensive exposure to all aspects of orthopaedic trauma.
The fellowship is designed to be flexible to accommodate the
individual fellow’s training needs and can be tailored to include
more upper limb trauma or lower limb / pelvic and acetabular
reconstruction as required.
3 session general trauma lists run at UHCW 7 days per week. In
addition there is a weekly orthoplastics list and upper limb trauma
lists every day Monday-Friday. There are currently 2 additional
specialist trauma lists per week for complex trauma (including
pelvic and acetabular cases) with plans to expand this to include
every day Monday-Friday.
Objectives:
The fellowship aims to equip a trainee with:

Proficiency in the management of patients with severe
multiple injuries and complex isolated injuries.

Decision making ability regarding operative and non-operative
care and the timing of intervention in multiply injured
patients.

Experience in complex peri-articular trauma of the upper and
lower limb including emergency management and definitive
treatment.

Experience in managing patients requiring limb reconstruction
including fine wire frames.

Experience in the use of arthroplasty for the acute treatment
and salvage of complex trauma.

Research and Education:
UHCW is linked to the University of Warwick and the Warwick
Clinical Trials Unit. It is the main training site for orthopaedic
specialist trainees on the Warwick rotation and provides clinical
training for medical students from the university. UHCW in
conjunction with the University of Warwick, run the largest portfolio of
clinical trials in trauma in the UK.
Fellows are expected to take advantage of the opportunities to be
involved with high quality research and are expected to undertake
at least one research project. They are also expected to assist in
the training of orthopaedic specialist trainees and medical students.
Management:
Fellows are encouraged to help in the smooth running of the trauma
department and gain experience in managerial skills. This can
include support and training of more junior trainees, attendance and
presentation at Major Trauma Centre MDTs and review and
development of clinical guidelines. Quality improvement projects
within the trauma department will be facilitated.
On-Call commitment
Fellows do not take part in the on-call rota and are not expected to
take part in out of hours clinical activity. There are however
opportunities to gain experience in the emergency management of
severely injured patients at trauma calls within the emergency
department.
