UHCW Fellowship Program in Adult Trauma Location: University Hospital Coventry Supervisors: Prof M Costa Mr J Young Overview: The UHCW trauma fellowship is aimed at orthopaedic surgeons who have completed or are near completion of their training and are planning a career involving care of the critically injured patient. UHCW is the second busiest adult Major Trauma Centre in the UK allowing extensive exposure to all aspects of orthopaedic trauma. The fellowship is designed to be flexible to accommodate the individual fellow’s training needs and can be tailored to include more upper limb trauma or lower limb / pelvic and acetabular reconstruction as required. 3 session general trauma lists run at UHCW 7 days per week. In addition there is a weekly orthoplastics list and upper limb trauma lists every day Monday-Friday. There are currently 2 additional specialist trauma lists per week for complex trauma (including pelvic and acetabular cases) with plans to expand this to include every day Monday-Friday. Objectives: The fellowship aims to equip a trainee with: Proficiency in the management of patients with severe multiple injuries and complex isolated injuries. Decision making ability regarding operative and non-operative care and the timing of intervention in multiply injured patients. Experience in complex peri-articular trauma of the upper and lower limb including emergency management and definitive treatment. Experience in managing patients requiring limb reconstruction including fine wire frames. Experience in the use of arthroplasty for the acute treatment and salvage of complex trauma. Experience in the management of the complications and sequelae of both complex and simple trauma. Ability to work with a multidisciplinary team to plan and deliver rehabilitation following complex trauma. Research and Education: UHCW is linked to the University of Warwick and the Warwick Clinical Trials Unit. It is the main training site for orthopaedic specialist trainees on the Warwick rotation and provides clinical training for medical students from the university. UHCW in conjunction with the University of Warwick, run the largest portfolio of clinical trials in trauma in the UK. Fellows are expected to take advantage of the opportunities to be involved with high quality research and are expected to undertake at least one research project. They are also expected to assist in the training of orthopaedic specialist trainees and medical students. Management: Fellows are encouraged to help in the smooth running of the trauma department and gain experience in managerial skills. This can include support and training of more junior trainees, attendance and presentation at Major Trauma Centre MDTs and review and development of clinical guidelines. Quality improvement projects within the trauma department will be facilitated. On-Call commitment Fellows do not take part in the on-call rota and are not expected to take part in out of hours clinical activity. There are however opportunities to gain experience in the emergency management of severely injured patients at trauma calls within the emergency department.
