Details of Service The Respiratory and Sleep Laboratory is committed to providing a professional, flexible and quality assured service, delivering reports of the highest standard. Our objectives are to: Measures the effect of disease on lung function Follow the course of any disease affecting lung function Assess pre-operative surgical risk Provide clinicians with reports of the highest quality Provide a diagnostic sleep service and initiate treatment under Physicians’ instructions Follow up patients on CPAP therapy to improve compliance and efficacy To engage in modernisation and implement change according to best international practice. The Mid Western Regional Hospitals comprises of the Mid Western Regional Hospital Dooradoyle, Mid Western Regional Orthopaedic Hospital, Croom and Mid Western Regional Maternity Hospital, Limerick, which are currently based on three sites. The Mid Western Regional Hospitals provide an extensive range of medical services, including both Inpatient and Out-patient. Diagnostic and clinical support services are also provided. Reporting Relationship In the absence of a Respiratory Technician Chief I, the Respiratory Technician Senior shall report to the Business Manager on administrative matters and Consultant Medical Staff on other matters. Purpose of the Post The Senior Respiratory Technician will be responsible for the provision of high quality sleep diagnostic tests and lung function procedures. Principal Duties and Responsibilities The successful candidate will be based in the Respiratory and Sleep lab and be responsible for: Provide a high standard of safe practice for patient care. Participate in patient care i.e. participation for procedures and reassurance of patient. Provide patient education. History taking and interpretation of request forms. Conduct a full range of standard non-invasive respiratory diagnostic tests including: o Spirometry o Reversibility studies. o Lung volumes by Gas Dilution Methods o Lung Volume by Body Plethysmography o Diffusion capacity o Tests of respiratory muscle function as deemed necessary by the Lead Consultant Respiratory Physician including SNIP, MIP and MEP. NRS0718 Respiratory Technician Senior Job Specification V1: Page 1 Conduct invasive respiratory diagnostic tests including Bronchoprovocation challenges Assist in developing and expanding the Non-invasive ventilation and Sleep service. o Conduct and supervise overnight diagnostic sleep tests. (limited sleep studies) o Conduct and supervise overnight titration studies on nasal CPAP therapy. o Supervise patients attending the Sleep service for follow-up assessments on nasal CPAP including downloading compliance from their machines. o Assess and set up patients for CPAP therapy. o Carry out ongoing treatment of these patients o Follow up patients on CPAP therapy to improve compliance and efficacy. Carry out cardio pulmonary exercise tests Carry out invasive provocation studies Be familiar with Skin Allergy Tests Analysis of studies and report preparation Carry out daily duties of the laboratory including appointments and record keeping Carry out daily maintenance and cleaning of equipment Engage in modernisation and implement change according to best international practice Be responsible for the supervision and training student and basic grade respiratory technicians. This post is pensionable. A panel will be formed from this recruitment campaign and future permanent or specified purpose vacancies of full time or part time hours will be filled from this panel.
