Welcome to English 9 with Mrs. Ashlock!!! This is your First Assignment!!!! Greetings! Hello and welcome to a great year at Rock Creek High School! This year in English 9, we will be doing a variety of activities, from reading Romeo and Juliet, to reading Life of Pi, a novel, to writing various types of texts. This will not always be the “typical” English class. I expect students to take an active role in their learning, whether that means acting out a story or playing a game to review vocabulary. Whatever it is we do in our classroom, the fun is up to you! Along with your books, writing utensils, and brains, please make sure you bring a good attitude! YOU MAKE YOUR OWN GOOD TIME!!! Supplies Students must have a 5-subject spiral notebook, a 5-subject college rule spiral notebook, one 3-inch 3-ring binder, pencils, pens (blue or black only), college rule notebook paper, two 2-pocket folders, eraser, and a highlighter. Texts We will use four primary texts in our class this year. They are Elements of Literature and Elements of Language, The Portable Harlem Renaissance Reader, and Life of Pi. The Elements of Language and The Portable Harlem Renaissance Reader will only be used in class. They will NOT be checked out of the room for any reason. If a student needs to complete work in either of these books, it MUST be done either before school, after school, or during advisor in Mrs. Ashlock’s room. The student must make an appointment the day before he or she plans to make up work in these texts. Rules and Consequences Rock Creek’s classroom rules are as follows: 1. All students should show respect for themselves, others, and property. Disrespectful behavior to teachers, staff, or other students will not be tolerated. 2. Profanity is not tolerated in the classroom or any other part of the building. 3. Disruptive noise or behavior will not be tolerated. 4. Each tardy after the 3rd tardy through the 10th tardy will result in a two hour detention. Tardiness received after the 10th tardy will result in a one day out of school suspension. 5. Sleeping in class will not be tolerated. 6. Students will follow all additional rules for individual teachers. 7. No food, drink, gum, candy, or any other product intended to be chewed and/or swallowed is allowed in Mrs. Ashlock’s class with the sole exception of a clear water bottle. Stuffing the remainder of food or drink in one’s mouth after being asked to dispose of it will be considered insubordination and a referral will automatically be sent to the office. Violations of the above rules will be dealt with according to Rock Creek’s Discipline Plan as follows: Inform – Teacher explains school and class rules on the first day of class. Verbal Warning – Teacher makes a note of verbal warning to student. First Report – Teacher sends student to office with referral. Teacher discusses referral with student, student signs referral, and teacher calls parents/guardians. Student receives 2 hour detention from administration. Second Report – Teacher sends student to office with referral. Teacher discusses referral with student and student signs referral. Student calls parents/guardian. Administration assigns four hour detention, contacts parents, and sets up conference with student, teacher, parents/guardians, and mediator. Third Report – Teacher sends student to office with referral. Teacher discusses referral with student, and student signs referral. Administration assigns suspension and arranges a conference with student, teacher, parents/guardians, and administrator. Fourth Report – Teacher sends student to office with referral. Teacher discusses referral with student. Administration permanently removes student from class and all class credit is lost. Actions resulting in immediate disciplinary action not requiring the above plan are: fighting, use of tobacco, use of alcohol or drugs, insubordinate behavior, and inappropriate/profane language. All of these actions, as stated in the handbook, are punishable by immediate suspension. Students missing class due to discipline problems will be counted as absent and unexcused from that class. Homework/Absences Students in class the day homework is due: Homework is due in the inbox on Mrs. Ashlock’s counter within 30 seconds after the ringing of the bell to start class. Homework not turned in by then will be considered late and will only be worth half credit. Late work will only be accepted until the end of the day the assignment was due. Students may not work on homework that was due at the beginning of the hour during class. Any student who violates this policy will receive a zero for the assignment. Students who are ill, absent, or on field trips: Students gone from school for a planned school or family function MUST see Mrs. Ashlock before you leave. Any homework due the day of a planned absence must turn it in before leaving or it will be counted as a zero unless turned in by the end of the school day. Those who do not will not be allowed to make up work after they return. Students who are ill MUST see Mrs. Ashlock the day they return; even if it is not a day they normally have class with her. Those who fail to do so will not be allowed to make up work once they return. Students allowed to make up work must do so by the next time their class meets. Those who do not will receive a zero for work missed. Students who miss school due to out of school suspension or unexcused absences will not be allowed to make up any missed work for credit. Students who have special circumstances arrive MUST talk to Mrs. Ashlock as soon as possible if alternative arrangements are to be made. Final Word It is good to have each and every one of you in class. Let’s all work together to make this an excellent year.
