On completion of this course leaders will be able to lead sessions This REPs (Register of Exercise Professionals) recognised course is offered throughout the UK – details of this course and other fitness related courses are on their website A practical course that provides ideas for teaching children. The course will cover Juniors (aged 5-11) and strategies for keeping teenagers motivated (aged 12-16). On Dance related qualifications for leaders Level 2 Kids’ Fitness – Street Dance (minimum age 18) YMCA www.ymcafit.org.uk £499 (currently only being run in London, however can deliver in Wales if requested for £425 per person) 5 days completion of this course leaders will be able to lead session On completion the leader will be able to run health related exercise classes (specialising in street dance) Brief outline of courses Level 1 Dance Leaders (Sports Leaders UK) The Level 1 Award in Dance Leadership is a nationally recognised qualification that enables successful candidates to lead small groups in simple dance activities whilst under the direct supervision of their tutor. The qualification teaches generic leadership skills such as organisation, planning, communication and teamwork through the medium of dance. It is a fun and practical qualification with no entrance requirements or final examinations to sit. The course consists of seven units of work: Unit 1 – planning, preparing and assisting a simple dance activity Unit 2 – basic communication skills for leading a dance activity Unit 3 – principles of health, fitness and safe dance practice Unit 4 – understanding the relationship of music and of dance Unit 5 – understanding the scope of opportunities in dance Unit 6 – creating, developing and assisting with the performance of a simple dance piece Unit 7 – demonstration of leadership skill in dance The award will take a minimum of 30 Guided Learning Hours. Various factors such as the candidate/tutor ratio, the number of candidates, and the experience levels of the candidates will influence the time allocated to the delivery of any given course. Unit 7 requires a minimum one hour of leadership to be completed by the candidate; this hour is not included in the 30 Guided Learning Hours. Dance related qualifications for leaders Level 2 Introduction to Community Dance (Community Dance Wales) This qualification is currently at development/accreditation approval stage and is anticipated to be running from September 2009 onwards. The course consists of six units of work: Unit 1 – understanding a range of issues which can impact on assessing and facilitating community dance Unit 2 – understanding the aspects of safety, anatomy and first aid in relation to leading a community dance activity Unit 3 – understanding the relationship between dance and music Unit 4 – recognise the need to plan, prepare and deliver community dance activity Unit 5 – create and deliver dance (recognising specific needs of an individual and/or group) Unit 6 – recognise and apply evaluation criteria The award will take a minimum of 30 taught hours and 30 self-study hours. Level 2 Exercise to Music (various providers) A course designed for those who wish to teach EXERCISE TO MUSIC. Successful students gain the Certificate in Teaching Exercise and Fitness – a nationally recognised Level 2 qualification awarded by the CYQ Exam Board. This gives entry onto the Register of Exercise Professionals. No prior knowledge or qualifications are necessary, however candidates must regularly attend Exercise to Music/Aerobic classes. The course covers: Anatomy and physiology Correct technique Teaching skills and effecting teaching methods Lesson planning Principles of training and planning progressive programmes Promoting physical activity Dance related qualifications for leaders Assessment is through a multi choice theory paper, a practical exam and completion of worksheets and lesson plans. Level 2 Kids Fit (Fitness Wales) Three days full of practical ideas for teaching children. The course will cover juniors (aged 5-11) and strategies for keeping teenagers motivated (aged 12-16). The module covers: The benefits and need for Kids Fit classes Design of safe and effective Kids fit lessons for ages 5 – 11 and 12 – 16 Practical ideas for children and teenagers Teaching skills and management of children Health and safety in running classes and setting up Kids Fit and Teen Activity Clubs Coping with special conditions Progressing your sessions It is essential that you have background knowledge of the body and how it works, therefore a recap of anatomy and physiology is useful before you attend the course. Assessment including planning sessions, submitting a 6 week progressive plan for one of the target age groups, completion of a case study for children with specific needs, theory paper and submission of a video of a session teaching children Level 2 Kids’ Fitness Street Dance (YMCA) The course will provide the attendee with the knowledge to design and deliver safe and fun exercise programmes for children aged between 5 – 16. The course is delivered through blended learning with 5 days practical plus self-study modules. The course will cover the following topics: Plan and teach safe and effective kids’ exercise and activity sessions appropriate to their age group Dance related qualifications for leaders Identify the physiological changes that occur during a child’s development Demonstrate how this will affect your planning and delivery of children’s’ sessions The assessment includes a theory paper, planning a safe and effective kids’ fitness session for two groups, video evidence of you teaching, written evaluation of your teaching, 6 week progressive programme and a case study.
