PCC POLICY #4062 Edward Martinez led the discussion on the new PCC policy #4062, “Philosophy and Criteria for Associate Degree and General Education.” The wording is taken directly from Title 5 regulations. He made the needed corrections and changes requested from the last C&I meeting. Although not in attendance, Dean Kritselis was concerned that in this policy, Arts should have a specific and distinct place. The paragraph discussing Humanities was taken directly from Title 5. The CCLC stipulates the model on the first page of the catalog. To change the title of section C of the policy would require changes to the catalog, other policies, and documents already at the state level. After approval by the C&I committee, the policy will go to the Academic Senate, then to the college coordinating council, the classified senate, the executive committee, and finally the Board of Trustees. This policy will not be in the next catalog (2009-2010), but will be in future catalogs. Will this come through C&I again? Yes, Edward will entertain recommendations for change. MSC LEWIS/STARBIRD to approve the above Policy #4062. 1 abstention 1 no III. COMMITTEE DISCUSSION/ACTION TO PLACE ITEMS ON FUTURE AGENDAS We are in the process of shaping next year’s schedule. There is a problem with the CEC process. In the future, C&I will address this issue. At the last C&I Subcommittee on Style and Mechanics, the group conducted a self-critique. A number of issues will be considered in the coming months. The committee will try to find a mechanism to relieve the sense of tension and adversity and give more clarity to the process. PRESENTATIONS AND AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION Dr. Jacobs said she was proud of what the committee has done and of Joe Futtner’s leadership. She acknowledged the hard work of Edward Martinez and the Office of Academic Support. In the past, people used to dread coming to C&I. That has changed. The ASB Vice President of Academic Affairs, Conner Lewis, was acknowledged for his presence and taking the student participation role to a higher, collegial, and professional level. V. ANNOUNCEMENTS The first meeting of the fall semester is a required orientation. VI. ADJOURNMENT MSC OLIVO/STARBIRD to adjourn the meeting. Meeting adjourned at 3:46 p.m. This concludes the Spring 2009 C&I Cycle. Minutes of the Curriculum & Instruction Committee Meeting April 30, 2009 Page 4
