SEPTEMBER 2013 NEWSLETTER
From the Principal's Desk…
MANY HANDS , MANY LANDS, ONE HEART
Beaucoup de mains, beaucoup de pays, un seul coeur
We look forward to an exciting year ahead with many rich learning opportunities for students! Staff are
committed to providing excellence in programming and to differentiating instruction to meet the diverse
needs of each child. We value the support of parents as we work together in partnerships to help children
reach their potential.
Technology continues to bring new ways of thinking and learning into our classrooms, and students develop
their knowledge and skills in both using and creating with technology. Leading educator and researcher,
Michael Fullan, articulates 6 C’s that reflect the 21st Century skills that are essential for success:
character education, citizenship, communication, critical thinking and problem solving, collaboration,
creativity and imagination. Teachers embed these skills in their lessons so that students can further
develop as 21st Century Citizens. Classroom teachers will be communicating with parents regarding the use
of BYOD in their classrooms and students will have many opportunities to utilize technology on a regular
basis.
The Peel District School Board’s Mission is to inspire success, confidence and hope in each student. We
know that when students develop a positive attitude towards learning and confidence in their own abilities
and areas of strength, they enjoy school and find satisfaction in setting and achieving goals. As we
collaborate together, we hope to make this a fantastic year of learning and growing for your child!

TERRY FOX DAY
SEPTEMBER 27, 2013
Barondale is a loyal supporter
of the Terry Fox Marathon
of Hope. At 9:00 a.m., staff
and
students
will
be
participating in the Terry
Fox Walk around the Barondale community. The
inspiring journey of Terry Fox has brought hope
to many people and the funds raised to support
cancer research truly make a difference in our
world.
Pledge forms will be sent home and
students may collect money from family and
friends to support the Terry Fox Foundation.
BUSSING
During the early part of the school
year you may find there are delays
for the first few days of school as
routes are monitored and times are finalized.
After the first few days, the timing should
become more consistent. If you want to find out
route information, times, etc. please go to the
following website: https://businfo.stopr.ca/
SCHOOL SPIRIT
Mondays are "wear your school
clothing/colours day". Students
and staff are encouraged to wear
their school shirts on Mondays to
promote school spirit. School clothing order
information will follow. Please check newsletters
for further information. All our newsletters are
available online: http://barondale.peelschools.org
After the September issue, hard copies will not
be sent home. If you do not have internet access,
please let your child’s teacher know that you will
need a hard copy of the newsletter.
LIBRARY
Classes will attend Library orientation
throughout the month of September.
After orientation, book exchange will begin.
Please take care of books that are brought home.
Students need to return books they have signed
out before they can sign out other books. Thank
you for your support in reinforcing responsibility.
CHARACTER MATTERS
Character development is essential as students
learn to work and cooperate with others in
community. As students develop strength of
character they make good choices that affect
them both now and throughout the rest of their
lives. At Barondale, we focus on a different
character attribute each month so that students
can develop an understanding of what each trait
looks like, sounds like and feels like in action. At
the end of each month, we hold a Celebration
Assembly to recognize students in each class who
have demonstrated one of the character
attributes in a concrete way. We encourage you
to focus on these at home as well and to reinforce
these attributes with your children.
In September, students are given an overview of
all the character traits. Our first Celebrations
Assembly will take place at the end of October.
The monthly traits for the year are:

VOLUNTEERS
We have many areas in which parents can become
involved. Parents can volunteer to support Grade
1 readers both in English and in French as part of
our Barondale Bookworms program. Parents can
also volunteer to assist in classrooms as well as to
accompany class trips. All volunteers require a
criminal record check. Please contact Ms. Wilson
if you would like to volunteer.
SCHOOL COUNCIL
SAFE WELCOME
The School Council is very active at Barondale and
supports a wide range of initiatives such as movie
nights, the annual fundraiser as well as smaller
fundraisers. Our first meeting will be held on
Tuesday, September 17 at 7:00 p.m. Elections will
be held to determine school council members for
2013-2014. Please see the office to complete a
nomination form if you are interested, and return
it by Thursday, September 12. All parents are
welcome at every school council meeting and
babysitting is provided.
School doors will remain locked during
the school day
FALL FAIR!
For Friday, October 4 our School
Council will be organizing our annual
Fundraiser. This year we will be
hosting a Fall Fair with lots of fun activities for
the whole family! If you would like to be involved
in this wonderful event, please attend our first
School Council meeting for more information.
WALKING TO SCHOOL
Students should not be brought
to school before 8:30 a.m. There
is no supervision for students
before 8:30 a.m. We encourage
students to walk to school. Walking is a healthy
lifestyle choice and reduces traffic congestion.
If you are driving to school in the morning,
parents should use the Kiss ‘n Ride to drop
students off. For safety reasons, the parking lot
will be closed from 8:30-8:45. At the end of the
day the parking lot will be closed from 3:05-3:25.
Parents who need to drive should park on the
street where permitted.
All students should be at school by 8:45 a.m.
When students are late, even by a few minutes,
they miss important routines and learning as well
as the opportunity to line up with their
classmates. It is also important for students to
develop the habit of punctuality. Punctuality is an
important life skill that will help students
throughout their lives. Please ensure that your
child is dropped off before 8:43 a.m. so that
they can line up with their class and enter the
school on time.
New buzzer system as of Sept. 2013
Beginning this September, the front doors of our
school will be locked during the school day. This is
part of the Safe Welcome program announced by
the government in December 2012 for elementary
schools in Ontario. As part of this program,
portable doors will also be locked during the
school day. A letter explaining this program was
sent home to all families in June 2013.
We have long had the practice for Peel schools
that all outside doors, with the exception of the
front door, would be locked during the school day.
While we acknowledge that locking doors will not
in itself prevent all risks to the safety of
students and staff, it is an important step in
providing an additional level of security.
A camera and buzzer unit have been installed by
the front door and will be linked to a monitor in
the main office of the school. Anyone who wishes
access to the school once the school day has
begun—parents, Peel board staff and visitors—
will request entry by pressing the buzzer. Staff
in the main office will be able to see and speak to
the person, and release the door lock to provide
access.
We understand that this new practice will require
some adjustment. In particular, you may have to
wait briefly at the front door before the buzzer
is answered. Also, please note that lunchtime at
our school is between 12:00 and 1:00. During this
time, office and administrative staff are busier
than at other times of the day so there may be a
delay in providing access. You may wish to choose
another time to visit our school.
While this new program will lead to changes in
routines, we are confident that the increased
security it provides will be reassuring to students,
families and staff. As a result of this new
practice, we ask that parents be patient when
waiting to enter the school. Thank you for your
continued support for the safety and well-being
of all students and staff in our schools.
HOT LUNCH PROGRAM
We are fortunate to have a weekly
hot lunch program at Barondale. The first hot
lunch date will be Friday, September 13. The
schedule for September will be as follows:
Friday, September 13
Friday, September 20
Friday, September 27
Pizza
Pizza
Pizza
All lunches will cost $5.00 and each lunch comes
with a drink and a cookie. Students may also
purchase pizza slices a la carte: 1 slice for $3.50
or 2 slices for $6.00 Thank you for supporting
our hot lunch program, we know that students
enjoy having the opportunity to order a special
lunch once a week!
Starting Monday, September 9, during the lunch
hour students will have an opportunity to purchase
items from the school store located in the front
office. Chocolate milk, white milk, juice and
cookies are sold for 75 cents each. Other items
such as handy snacks are sold for 50 cents.
Healthy chips are sold for $1.00. All items
comply with the Ministry Food Policy.
PEANUT ALLERGY REMINDER
Please be advised that we have a
number of children in our school
who
have
severe
allergies.
Allergies to nuts and peanuts or
peanut/nut products is life-threatening for some
of our students. Mere contact can result in a
severe and dangerous reaction called Anaphylactic
Shock. We would ask your cooperation in not
sending peanuts, nuts or peanut/nut products to
school for snacks or in lunches. In this way we
can create a safe environment for our students.
PLEASE DO NOT DROP
OFF LUNCHES
Due to our SAFE WELCOME policy,
school doors will be locked during
the day. For this reason, please organize your
child’s lunch in the morning before school so that
lunches do not need to be dropped off during the
school day. Thank you for your cooperation.
ACTIVITY FEES
At the beginning of October, parents will receive
a letter regarding activity fees for the 20132014 school year. Upon the recommendation of
School Council, we collect fees for trips and
special items at the beginning of the year rather
than periodically throughout the year. Parents
find that this simplifies payments to pay once
early in the year. Parents also appreciate having a
list of all trips to mark on their calendars.
Each child will receive a letter with itemized
events listed and the cost of each item. These
will vary depending on the grade. Agenda costs
will also be reflected on this list. If some parents
prefer, items can still be paid for separately
throughout the year. Also, if the payment for any
of the items presents a particular concern for
certain parents, please do not hesitate to contact
the principal, Ms. Redhead, after receiving the
activity fees letter. It is important for all
children to be given equal opportunity to attend
special events, and accommodations can be made
if necessary.
AGENDAS
Agendas are a good tool for
students as they begin to develop the habit of
monitoring dates for assignments due, tests,
presentations and other special events. Agendas
help students develop a sense of responsibility as
they record reminders to bring items to school
such as library books and gym clothes. Student
agendas can also be used as a communication tool
with your child's teacher. Your child will record
important information in the agenda on a daily
basis. Please review the pages in the front of the
agenda for important information about school
policies and procedures.
EARLY YEARS CENTRE
The Early Years Centre will be open
every Tuesday in Room 107 from 9:30
a.m. until 11:30 a.m. Parents enter and
exit through the back side doors. This
program is for parents and children ages 0 – 5.
Caregivers must attend with their children.
Please call (905) 452-1973 for more information.

EXTENDED VACATIONS
Research shows that extended time off from
school can have a negative impact on student
progress. Students miss key information and skill
building as well as the variety of learning
opportunities that are provided throughout the
school year. Wherever possible, please try to
arrange extended vacations during school holidays
rather than during instructional time. If your
child is away for a period of more than five school
days, a form needs to be completed which can be
obtained from the school office.
