Tel. 01 679 3188 Fax: 673 0040 Email: iris.murray@hospice-foundation.ie Friday, 10th October 2008 9.30am – 5.00pm (please note this particular session will end at 5pm) Overview of Children and Loss (Brid Carroll) This workshop will provide an overview of the subject “children and loss” and will also be a framework for the rest of the course. It will cover various theories of bereavement and loss and demonstrate the link between attachment and loss in the life of a child. Thursday, 13th and Friday, 14th November 2008 9.30am – 4.00pm Younger Children and Death (Nuala Harmey) This workshop will examine the issues that arise for young, bereaved children and their carers. Participants will have an opportunity to familiarise themselves with some of the materials that are useful in working with this population. Thursday, 4th December 2008 9.30am – 4.00pm Difficult Deaths (Barnardos Bereavement Counselling for Children) This workshop will focus on the effect of traumatic deaths on children and the complications imposed on their grieving process. Therapeutic techniques to help children cope with complicated grief will be explored. Friday, 5th December 2008 9.30am – 4.00pm Children: Separation and Loss (Dr. Réamonn O’Donnchadha) This workshop will examine other losses sustained by children, particularly those losses related to parental separation. Friday, 9th January 2009 9.30am – 4.00pm Integrative Tutorial Session Participants will meet in small groups to review course experience and relate it to their work situation. Thursday, 5th February 2009 9.30am – 4.00pm Therapeutic Interventions with Children, an Introduction to Art and Clay (Suzie Cahn) Participants will be given hands-on experiential practice in the therapeutic use of art and clay, and will have an introduction into how this can be used to facilitate children’s grief. (Participants are advised to wear old clothes for this particular session). Friday, 6th February 2009 9.30am – 4.00pm Adolescents and Loss (Brid Carroll) This workshop will explore change and loss in the life of the adolescent. The presenter will address family and peer loss and the issue of teenage suicide. Thursday, 26th March 2009 9.30am – 4.00pm Group Work with Children (Helen Culhane) This workshop will incorporate group work techniques as a model for helping bereaved children and young people. Friday, 27th March 2009 9.30am – 4.00pm When a Child has a Life-Limiting Illness (Ann D’Arcy and Liz O’Donoghue) This workshop will focus on the needs of children with a life-limiting illness. The issues facing the child, the family and the professionals will be explored from a multi-disciplinary perspective. Thursday, 23rd April 2009 9.30am – 4.00pm Integrative Tutorial Session Participants will review their experience on the course and will discuss their course assignments. Friday, 24th April 2009 9.30am – 4.00pm Services for Children Participants will learn about resources and referrals.
