Appendix C – Individual placement description North Western Foundation School UHSM Programme General Surgery Placement Description Placement Foundation Trainee in General surgery with exposure to general surgery, emergency general surgery and colorectal surgery. By providing good supervision with a multidisciplinary team approach to surgery, the trainee should in this safe and supportive environment achieve learning, safe practice, communication skills, personal development and competency in the fields required, as outlined in the Foundation Programme Curriculum. The trainee will work in a team with one core surgical trainee, one speciality registrar and one consultant. There is exposure to multiple disciplines including nursing staff, specialist nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, gastroenterology, medicine, anaesthesia, endoscopy, radiology, intensive care, palliative care team and social services. The trainee will be involved in the admission and care of patients with surgical disease. The trainee will be encouraged to admit emergency patients. Emergency referrals from the GP are being admitted directly to the GP Surgical Assessment Unit and this provides an opportunity for the FYl to be exposed and involved in the management of an emergency surgical patient. Elective patients are usually assessed by the foundation trainee in a well run pre-operative clinic. The trainee will be encouraged to attend theatre and out-patient clinics. Learning opportunities include formal FYl teaching and the trainee is free to attend this on Tuesday afternoons. The middle grade team and nursing staff are encouraged to keep this afternoon "bleep free". There is a cancer MDT on Friday afternoon that the trainee should attend for their education. The trainee is encouraged to attend the grand round on Fridays as part of their formal training. There is in house consent training for the foundation trainee. Journal club is held on alternate Wednesday lunchtimes. The general surgery department offers a basic surgical skill half day approximately 3 times a year and is run by Mr Welch. The importance of patient safety is supported by well run bi monthly departmental clinical governance meeting. The department encourages audit projects which are presented at the departmental clinical governance meeting. The foundation trainee is on call and their rota is compliant with the EWTD. Handover is currently held at 8am and 8 pm on ward A6 for the on call team for general surgery and BVU. The trainee will be supervised by the consultant with initial, mid term and end of placement meetings.
