Placement
Foundation Trainee in General surgery with

surgery and colorectal surgery.
By providing good supervision with a
multidisciplinary team approach to surgery, the
trainee should in this safe and supportive
environment achieve learning, safe practice,
communication skills, personal development
and competency in the fields required, as
outlined in the Foundation Programme
Curriculum. The trainee will work in a team with
one core surgical trainee, one speciality registrar
and one consultant. There is exposure to
multiple disciplines including nursing staff,
specialist nurses, physiotherapists, occupational
therapists, gastroenterology, medicine,
anaesthesia, endoscopy, radiology, intensive
care, palliative care team and social services.
The trainee will be involved in the admission
and care of patients with
surgical disease. The trainee will be encouraged
to admit emergency patients. Emergency
referrals from the GP are being admitted
directly to the GP Surgical Assessment Unit and
this provides an opportunity for the FYl to be
exposed and involved in the management of an
emergency surgical patient. Elective patients are
usually assessed by the foundation trainee in a
well run pre-operative clinic. The trainee will be
encouraged to attend theatre and out-patient
clinics.
Learning opportunities include formal FYl
teaching and the trainee is free to attend this on
Tuesday afternoons. The middle grade team and
nursing staff are encouraged to keep this
afternoon "bleep free". There is a cancer MDT
on Friday afternoon that the trainee should
attend for their education. The trainee is
encouraged to attend the grand round on
Fridays as part of their formal training. There is
in house consent training for the foundation
trainee. Journal club is held on alternate
Wednesday lunchtimes. The general surgery
department offers a basic surgical skill half day
approximately 3 times a year and is run by Mr
Welch. The importance of patient safety is
supported by well run bi monthly departmental
clinical governance meeting. The department
encourages audit projects which are presented
at the departmental clinical governance
meeting. The foundation trainee is on call and
their rota is compliant with the EWTD. Handover
is currently held at 8am and 8 pm on ward A6
for the on call team for general surgery and
