An employment-based provider of initial teacher training through the GTP – the Graduate Teacher Programme. Trainee teachers are employed by a school as an unqualified teacher under teachers terms and conditions The programme is normally three-terms How do I find where my nearest provider is? Use the TDA (Training and development Agency) website (tp://www.tda.gov.uk/ Go to Link – routes into teaching What qualifications will I need? For September 2012 entry qualifications will change from current requirements: These have been flagged up in the Government’s White paper The following is likely: What phases of training are available? Primary There are three phases: Foundation /Key Stage 1 Key Stage 1 and Lower KS2 Key Stage 2 Secondary (training across two Key Stages, normally KS3 and KS4) Maths Physics Chemistry Design and Technology ICT Modern Foreign Languages Biology Secondary Subjects Art and Design Dance/Drama English Geography History Physical education Music Religious Education How are places allocated? By the TDA – the source of funding Allocations can vary from one year to another The TDA provides a salary grant to the partnership schools We have approximately 25 primary and all secondary schools in the partnership How many places are available? Places are not known for September 2012 Currently, (2011-2012) we have been allocated 27 primary and 49 secondary places. What advice would you give me? Look at the various routes into teaching Ensure that you are clear about the qualifications requirement for 2012. (Degree/GCSEs) Gain school experience – as much as you can, paid or voluntary so that you can be sure that this is the career you wish to pursue Advice continued.... Training is demanding and time-consuming.... Is this the right time for you to train? Consider your personal circumstances Don’t wait until close to the application deadline to look for school experience Schools may expect or require a CRB clearance before offering you time in school How do I apply and when is the deadline? The Government is setting up an online application portal and so you will apply electronically via this to individual EBIITs. You will have to access the TDA site and send the electronic form to individual providers using the guidance posted by individual providers You will not be able to apply to a number of providers with just the one completed form. Applications continued Applications will be opened and deadlines for completion set by individual providers Currently we open at the start of November (with an end of January deadline) This may vary – always check our website What else can you tell me? Completion of the three Skills tests may well be an entry requirement rather than an exit requirement. These are online tests in literacy, numeracy and ICT. They are managed through test centres Details awaited How is my training supported? All trainee teachers have to meet the Q Standards These are being revised for September 2012 Progress towards meeting the standards is assessed at various points during the year, with a final assessment. Do I have to teach straight away? No, your training progresses through a number of stages, starting with school induction. You will work closely with your School Based Trainer and colleagues from the Partnership. You will attend training seminars and complete tasks and studies How successful are GTP trainee teachers? At the end of 2010, all primary and 96 % of secondary trainee teachers assessed at the end of training gained employment as qualified teachers, many in the schools that trained them. A small number of trainee teachers withdraw from the programme, for varied reasons. This is typical of all ITT courses and is not particular to one programme or another What do the best applicants do? Complete the application form carefully Write a high quality letter of application Show how they have prepared for a career in teaching and know which phase they wish to train in. Have shown how they meet the person specification What do the best applicants do? Have used opportunities to gain school experience. Gained an understanding of the expectations placed on teachers today Gained a broad knowledge of the school curriculum, for either the primary or secondary phase. Have observed/ supported teaching to gain knowledge of current teaching expectations and methods. How competitive is the programme? VERY! Whilst it does vary from phase to phase and from subject to subject, there are over 6 applicants for every place
