I have a special interest in disorders of the cervical and lumbar spine. CURRENT APPOINTMENT Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon April 2005 to date Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth I was appointed in 2004 to expand the spinal services within a large orthopaedic and Trauma Unit. I regularly take part in the general trauma on call rota, however I also provide a service for spinal trauma and emergencies. My elective practice is entirely spinal including surgery of the cervical lumbar and thoracic spine. I am the UK trainer for Prodics C cervical disc replacements and run regular courses at Portsmouth. PREVIOUS CONSULTANT APPOINTMENT Locum Consultant Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon Frenchay Hospital, Bristol September 2004 to March 2005 Six month locum post covering the temporary absence of the senior consultant spine surgeon. Frenchay Hospital is the principal Spinal Centre for the South West of England, encompassing both Orthopaedic and Neurosurgical spine surgeons. The post provided further experience in general and spinal trauma. My elective surgery caseload was exclusively spinal surgery. Procedures I performed included degenerative lumbar surgery as well as more complex procedures such as revision scoliosis surgery, anterior thoraco-lumbar surgery and cervical surgery. SPINAL TRAUMA The Princess Alexandra Hospital is the Regional Spinal Centre for Queensland and part of New South Wales, providing cover for a population of 4.5 million people. 3 My on call commitment was 1in 2 and as the Spinal Fellow on call I was responsible for the acute management and surgical treatment of spinal emergencies, including patients with spinal cord injuries. ADULT SPINE The fellowship has provided management and surgical experience in adult pathology of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine. I have been taught anterior and posterior approaches to all regions of the spine. I have gained further experience in all aspects of adult spinal surgery including degenerative disease, deformity, infection and tumours affecting the spine.
