NORWICH HIGH SCHOOL FOR GIRLS GDST
INFORMATION FOR PROSPECTIVE NEW TEACHERS
Senior School
Norwich High School operates a working day of nine periods, with six periods in the
morning and three in the afternoon.
Morning registration is at 8.30 a.m., with assembly from 8.40 a.m. to 9.00 a.m. Morning
break is from 10.15 a.m. to 10.35 a.m.
Lunchtime is from 1.00 p.m. until 2.00 p.m. The afternoon lessons run from 2.00 p.m. until
3.50 p.m.
Most staff are form tutors and they normally have one lunch duty a week. In addition, we
operate a system of ‘On Calls’ to substitute for absent staff and most staff have three ‘On
Call’ periods per week.
There is one Personal, Social and Health Education lesson each week taken by form
tutors and there is a daily assembly of which one is an annual form/form tutor assembly.
All staff also make a contribution to the school’s co-curricular programme, for example, by
running a club or activity or assisting on trips and expeditions.
Junior School
The Junior School is sub-divided into Infants (Nursery, Reception, Years 1 and 2) and
Juniors (Years 3 to 6).
Polliwiggle Nursery is open from 8.00 a.m. until 3.30 p.m. The Nursery girls join the
Infants for lunch from 12.00 noon to 12.30 p.m.
The Infant and Junior day starts with registration at 8.30 a.m. This is followed by assembly
from 8.40 a.m. to 9.00 a.m. Morning break is from 10.10 a.m. to 10.30 a.m. for Infants and
from 10.15 a.m. to 10.35 a.m. for Juniors. Lunchtime is from 12.00 noon to 1.10 p.m. for
Infants and from 12.25 p.m. to 1.30 p.m. for Juniors. The register is taken after lunch each
day.
The afternoon session ends at 3.10 p.m. for Infants and at 3.50 p.m. for Juniors. There is
a late waiting room which is supervised by teaching assistants until 4.30 p.m. Teaching
assistants supervise the early room which is open between 8.00 a.m. and 8.30 a.m. every
morning.
All full-time teachers except the Head of Junior School are form tutors and will teach their
own class for the majority of lessons. Specialist teachers are introduced from Year 4
upwards. Each form teacher is responsible for an annual form assembly.
Staff share in a rota of duties which are up to one and a half hours weekly. Form teachers
are asked to contribute to the school’s co-curricular programme by running a club or
activity.
Continuing Professional Development
At Norwich High School we are committed to the Continuing Professional Development
(CPD) of our staff. There is a ring-fenced budget that is devolved to the middle managers
and overseen by the SLT. CPD, in a variety of forms, is monitored by the Deputy Head
and is directly linked to the Annual Staff Reviews, Departmental and School Strategic
Development Plans.
In addition, the GDST has an extensive Central Training and Staff Development
Programme designed to ‘support, enable and promote’ individual staff as well as wholeschool initiatives.
All posts of responsibility are advertised internally, as well as externally, where
appropriate.
General points of interest
A free lunch, including tea or coffee, is provided during term-time for all members of staff
attending work for that day. A hot lunch, with a vegetarian option as well as a selection of

There is a staffroom committee, elected every two years to look after the welfare of the
staff of Norwich High School. There is also a Staff Consultative Committee which meets
three times a year.
All staff may become members of BUPA and gain a 20% discount on the normal
