Goring Primary School Curriculum Plan Terms 5 & 6
Literacy: The theme for Term 5 will be ’Superheroes’, We will look at
stories with superheroes as the main characters and the children will
create their own superhero, write poems and write a superhero story. We
will also be looking at information texts and will spend lots of time in the
wildlife area. We will also look at poems with a theme and create our own
poems. The children’s word level skills will be reinforced and applied during
shared and guided reading.
Phonics: The children will continue to have a daily phonics session and we
will focus on, tricky words, alternative spellings of phonics, alternative
pronunciations and learn some new sounds too. The children will have a
phonics screening test during the week commencing 17th June 2013.

Numeracy: We will be focusing on counting in 5’s and 10s, number
sequences 10 more and less, place value, adding 2 digit numbers to 1 digit
numbers and adding two 2 digit numbers, capacity, time to the half hour,
subtracting multiples of 10, money making amounts and working out change.
The children will also have a weekly maths investigation where they have to
use all their mathematical skills to solve a problem, record their findings
and discuss their results. Homework will reflect work that has taken place
in the classroom during the week
Music: The main focus for these two terms will be working towards our
Summer Production – this year about a ‘Seaside Adventure’. We will also be
working on improving our sense of rhythm, pulse and pitch and exploring
different musical timbres, tempo and dynamics.

Science: We will be covering two topics during terms 5/6. These are Sound
and Hearing, in which we will learn how to recognize and classify sounds.
This will include sound safety. We will conduct investigations to help
understand how sound travels, can cause vibration and the how and the why
of dynamic changes. The children will also study Plants and Plant Growth,
placing emphasis on practical investigation into plant recognition, health and
habitat. We will be learning how to record data and forming simple
conclusions
I.C.T. The units this term are titled ‘We are TV Chefs’ and ‘We are
Gardeners’. The children will be making a short video showing how to make a
simple meal or snack. They will also use a simulation to find the best
growing conditions for a plant. Other on-going work will be cross curricular
in nature.
Topic: Term 5 London – looking at the major events which have shaped
the city from early settlers, famous people, the plague and fire to the
Blitz, Thames Barrier and the Olympic Games, with an emphasis on history.
Term 6 Water – starting with island homes, simple mapping, living things
and animal habitats through to the River Thames, droughts and flooding,
saving water and effective hand washing. We will go on a boat trip.
We will also briefly look at the Art Of the Impressionists before the end
of term. This will centre on the use of colour, style and work of Van Gogh,
Monet, Seurat and Sisley.
PE: Games Activities including circle games, finding space, balancing
beanbags, quoit skills, ball skills and ball games. We will also be preparing
for Sports Day and two swimming lessons per week on Thursdays and
Fridays.
PSHE: In PSHE we will continue to follow the DfES scheme studying the
social and emotional aspects of learning. This will include looking at people
who are special to us; understanding and managing our feelings; starting to
understand the feelings of others; and coping with changes.

R.E.: We will be learning about prayer, in the context of Christianity. We
will find out about Jewish and Muslim life, styles of dress and places of
worship, with emphasis on identifying and acknowledging appropriate codes
of behaviour and respect, common to all. The children will be encouraged to
ask questions and form independent judgements.
