DFCS Parent Orientation Outline
Session 1
Overview of the Child Welfare System (2 hours)
GOALS:
(A) Participants will gain understanding of the Child Welfare System.
(B) Participants will identify the procedures or steps to take if there is
conflict with the social worker.
(C) Participants will identify ”Who’s Who in the Court Room”
(D) Participants will identify the different roles of the social workers (DI,
ER, Continuing etc.)
Session 2
Guest Speakers / Parent’s Attorney / Social Work Supervisor (2 hours)
GOALS:
(A) Participants will gain understanding of what occurs during the different
Court Hearings (Initial Hearing, Jurisdiction/Disposition, 6-12-18 month
review, Post Permanency reviews, Supplemental Petitions etc.).
(B) Participants will identify various ways of working with their social
worker to be successful.
Session 3
Guest Speakers/ the Office of the Ombudsman/ Foster Parents/ Child
Support (2 hours)
GOALS:
(A) Participants will gain an understanding of the services offered by the
Office of the Ombudsman.
(B) Participants will gain an understanding of the role of the Foster Parent.
(C) Participants will identify different resources available.
