August 20, 2014 Dear Choral Music Educator: I am writing to tell you about the GVSU High School Voice Day that will be held on Friday, October 10, 2014, 9:00-2:30 pm, on the GVSU campus in the PERFORMING ARTS CENTER. This event is designed for promising high school students of voice. During this special event the GVSU voice and choral area faculty will present hands-on workshops including effective warm-ups, audition techniques, and masterclasses; a performance featuring GVSU voice students, a side by side rehearsal with selected small ensembles, a presentation on vocal health by Dr. Rachel Gates and masterclasses with our visiting guest artists and master teachers, Jane Bunnell and Marc Embree of DePaul University School of Music. Lunch will be provided with an opportunity to visit with current GVSU students. Teachers and parents are welcome to attend and observe all the events of the day. Students submitting a strong recommendation from either their choral or private voice teacher are invited to participate in the Bunnell/Embree Masterclasses. Announcements of those selected for this masterclass will be made via email by Oct 1st. In addition ALL STUDENTS are invited to bring a prepared song to present in the other workshops throughout the day. Please return your application(s) by Friday September 27th to ensure a spot for your student(s). Because space is limited, participation will be determined on a first-come-first-served basis. Each student will be asked to bring an art song (English or foreign language) or music theatre selection that must be memorized and performance-ready (if singing in a foreign language know your translation well). This event is sponsored by the GVSU Department of Music and is offered at NO COST to participating students. The students need only cover the cost of their travel and accommodations if necessary. The Sleep Inn Hotel (616-892-8000), located just north of campus, is convenient and reasonably priced. Please see the attached application and feel free to contact Professor Dale Schriemer at schriemd@gvsu.edu if you have any questions.
