INFECTION CONTROL ANNUAL STATEMENT APRIL 2014- APRIL 2015
PURPOSE
This annual statement will be generated each year in September
. It will summarise:
 Any infection transmission incidents and any action taken (these will have been reported in
accordance with our Significant Event Policy).

Details of any infection control audits undertaken and actions taken.

Details of any infection control risk assessments undertaken.

Details of staff training.

Any review and update of policies, procedures and guidelines.
Significant Events
In the past year there have been no significant events raised that related to infection control.
These were discussed at a meeting attended by both doctors and nurses. Control measures were
put in place to prevent such incidents occurring again and policies and procedure were amended
accordingly. Appropriate infection screening was successfully implemented following advice from
the relevant professional bodies.
Audits
An audit on Coil/Smear and Minor Surgery are undertaken annually.
As part of our open and sharing policy and sharing information with our patients, the statement is
placed on our website and will be notifying patients of any seasonal outbreaks that they may need
to be aware of via posters in the surgery and on our website.
The practice carries out six monthly infection control audits.
Risk Assessments
Risk assessments are carried out so that best practice can be established and then followed. In the last year
a number of risk assessments were carried out.
Curtains
The surgery has various curtains and blinds, both at the windows and in consulting rooms as modesty screens
to be used around couches during examinations. The NHS Cleaning Specifications state the curtains should
be cleaned or if using disposable curtains, replaced every 6 months. To this effect we use disposable curtains
and ensure they are changed every 6 months. The window blinds are very low risk and therefore do not
require a particular cleaning regime other than regular vacuuming to prevent build up of dust. The modesty
curtains although handled by clinicians were never handled by patients and clinicians would always remove
gloves after an examination and before touching the curtains.
Staff Training
Infection Control policies are circulated amongst staff for reading and discussed at meetings on an annual
basis during September and October. The policies are currently in circulation.
Policies, Procedures and Guidelines
Most policies are formally reviewed annually, however all are amended on an ongoing basis as current advice
changes, or need arises.
