Sedgwick Middle School
Clubs, Intramural Sports, & Music Ensembles 2015 – 2016
* Participation in many extracurricular activities require a student to pay the once per year fee of $25
per the Board of Education decision for this school year. These activities are marked with an asterisk *.
*Art Clubs:
Art Explorations
Explore Art through planned activities. Dates and locations will be announced and posted for each workshop
throughout the year. Students will be given the opportunity to sign up prior to the activity or activities that are
of interest.
*Drama Club- Mr. Tracey
This year we will be presenting The Lion King Jr. Auditions will be held immediately after the Thanksgiving
break, and the cast(s) will be posted before the December break. Some of the "leads" will be double-cast. The
shows will be held from Thursday, April 28, 2016 thru Sunday, May 1, 2016.
Stage crew will meet on Saturdays to construct the set beginning in January. Lighting, sound, and other
production necessities will also be handled by the stage crew during rehearsals and performances.
*Stage Crew Club- Mr. Tracey
This club gives student a setting in which to learn the technical skills needed to put on a production. In
addition, students design and construct scenery, learn and implement lighting and sound design. The club meets
after school in the fall and week-ends in the winter.
Girl Rising Mentoring Program –Mrs. Bruenn & Mrs. Nitowski:
BRAVE Girls Leadership Program is committed to being BRAVE. We are committed to working hard in order
to have a positive impact on the world. We work to empower all girls to develop leadership skills, build
relationships through mentoring, and provide service to the community. We meet after school (usually
Tuesdays) from 3-4 with some evening events as well. Listen for dates on the announcements and check us out
at girlsarebrave.org - see Mrs. Bruenn in room 316 or Mrs. Nitowski in room 317 for more information. All
girls are welcome!
Gay/Straight Alliance (GSA) - Advisors: Renee Kleinman, Christine Welch-Meier, Rachel Kane
This group seeks to create a safe place for all students to discuss issues of diversity and have fun.
How do I join? How do I attend meetings or contact an Advisor or another member? When does this activity
meet? Every 1st and 3rd Monday after school in Mrs. Kleinman’s Office. Start date: Monday, Oct 5, 2015
Sedgwick Cross Country – Mr. Tracey
There will be a Sedgwick Cross Country Team in the fall that will be part of the intramural system. Teams will
train 2-3 afternoons a week and compete in local and state meets after school and on select Saturday mornings.

This popular program is open to students of every grade and ability level. Intramural sessions are held on most
afternoons--except for early-release Wednesdays--from 3:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. and late buses are available. The

Kids’ Lit - Ms. Natale, Mrs. McNeice, Mrs. Berkowitz and Ms. Moore
Meetings are once or twice a week during lunch from mid-October through January.
Kids’ Lit is an international literature competition for children ages 10 – 13. Participants are avid readers of
children’s and young adult literature who compete in teams of four. The contest to represent the United States
is held at Central Connecticut State University in late January, and the winning team attends the World Final.
Sedgwick has won the U.S. competition two years in a row and is striving for a “three-peat.”
Knitting Club- Ms. Nagler
Knitting club is offered to all students on Tuesdays. Students will learn the enjoyable hobbies of knitting and
crocheting. Finished products will be donated to local charities in need. All interested students need to sign up
in Room 119. Limited to 30 students. We will meet Tuesdays 3:00 – 4:00 in room 119. Knitting Club starts
Tuesday, September 29th for 8th graders, all other grade levels will begin Tuesday, October 6th.
*Math Counts-Ms.Tauro
This nationwide math coaching program concludes in February with a regional competition held at the
University of Hartford. All students interested in strengthening their “mathleticism” may sign up in room 227.
Weekly practice sessions are held from October through December. A school competition is held to select a
team to participate in the regional competition.
Minecraft-Mrs. McNeice
Come to the library media center to play Minecraft on our school serve. Quest, build, compete! Work together
in world creation. Explore maps. Sometimes we play in creative mode, other times in survival! Meets
Thursdays in the Library Media Center beginning Thursday, Oct. 1st.
*Mock Trial – Ms. Hartunian
Students analyze a mock court case and present both sides of the case in a regional competition held in late
January. All students interested in the law should sign up. The team consults with a local lawyer, prepares the
case and practices after school. Students can take on the roles of either attorneys or witnesses.
*Music-First Strings-Mr. Hopko
Admission is by audition. First String provides the most dedicated string players an opportunity to perform
advanced orchestral literature. This ensemble rehearses every Monday afternoon from 3:00-4:00 pm and every
Thursday morning from 7:30-8:15 am
*Music-Jazz Band-Mrs. Wattel
Admission is by audition. This ensemble gives advanced middle school students in the opportunity to perform
various styles of jazz music. This group rehearses after school on Tuesday from 3:00 - 4:00
pm and Friday mornings from 7:30-8:15 am.
*Music-Sounds-Ms. Valliere
Admission is by audition in the spring. This is a select choral group for grades 7 & 8. Rehearsals are
Mondays before school at 7:30 – 8:15 am and Thursdays from 3-4pm.
*Music-Top of the Sixes-Ms. Lotstein
Admission is by audition in September. The 6th grade select choir allows talented students the opportunity to
participate musically outside of school time. Rehearsals are Monday afternoons 3-4pm and Thursday mornings
7:30-8:15 am.
Robotics Club-Rachel Kane
Students will be building VEX and Seaperch (Underwater) robots. The students will be competing against other
robotics teams across the state, and potentially the country. The students learn how to design, build and program
different types of robots with varying robotics programming software. The Robotics Club is open to all students
and will meet on Tuesdays.
*Sedgwick Scroll- Mrs. Altman/Mrs. Kempf
This award winning group publishes the school literary magazine featuring writings and artwork of Sedgwick
students. This organization seeks to nurture student’s talents by providing a vehicle whereby students may see
their work enjoyed by others. Meets every other week in room 324. Please check Daily Bulletin.
*Step Team- Mrs. Fletcher and Mrs. Legenza
Students on the Step Team learn and create exciting, synchronized and rhythmic step routines that are
performed both at Sedgwick events and within the community. This activity teaches students the merits of
teamwork, practice, perseverance and cooperative learning. It also provides them with the opportunity to
display their creativity and refine their leadership skills. There is a fall and spring season and 1-2 school
performances, held either during the school day or after school for family and friends. Students are expected to
commit to weekly practices on either Mondays or Thursdays.
Student Council-Ms. Paige Croce and Katherine Krasula
Student Council Representatives are elected by each homeroom. The Student Council is the formal means by
which students communicate their ideas and concerns to the faculty. Student Council works to benefit the
community at Sedgwick and beyond by organizing student activities throughout the year as well as participating
in community outreach projects such as food, clothing, and money drives. Students who are not elected as
homeroom representatives and wish to participate may join one of the Student Council committees. Student
Council meets in Room 106 from 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. beginning Monday, September 21st.
*Technology Student Association (TSA)- Ms. Lukas
Do you like to design things? Build your designs? Win trophies? Then the Technology Student Association
(TSA) is for you! Students are challenged with research, design and modeling projects such as CO2 dragsters,
gliders, boats, digital photography, designing games, websites, and construction projects like bridges…just to
name a few. Over 28 activities are available! TSA is open to all students. Meeting times are Tuesday and
Friday after school in room 121. It begins Friday, Sept. 18th.
Unified Sports-Mr. Bowie/Mr.Garneau/Mrs. Brezinski/Mr. Baldwin
Unified Sports is a program which combines approximately equal numbers of special needs students with
regular education partners for instruction and competition in a variety of sports. Unified Sports teams are
placed in competitive divisions based on their skill abilities and range from training divisions to high-level
competition. There will be a soccer and basketball season. Unified Sports will begin its 2015 soccer season on
Sunday, Sept. 6 from 5:00 – 6:30 p.m. on the Sedgwick fields.
*Unified Theatre-Ms. Lotstein & Mrs. Brezinski
The mission of the Unified Theatre is to create a theatrical production equally featuring the talents of
individuals with and without special needs. There are opportunities for students on stage and behind the scenes.
Rehearsals start in September, and run through November. First meeting Friday, Sept. 18th at 3:00 p.m. in the
cafeteria.
Video Club- Ms. Lukas
Interested in filming sports or school events using a variety of cameras and editing software? Want to produce
a video for the local channel 5 TV station? Join the Video Club.
Meetings are on Thursdays in room 121. The club starts Thursday, Sept. 24th.
*Yearbook Club- Ms. Elliott and Ms. Nagler
Eighth grade students’ work with advisors to format, sell, and distribute the Sedgwick yearbook. Meeting
schedule is determined by workload throughout the year. First Meeting Monday, Sept. 28th.
