ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY “Participation in interscholastic activities is a privilege and not a right. Students wishing to participate are required to meet standards of personal behavior and academic performance which are related to school purposes.” (CHSAA Handbook, 44) The ThunderRidge policy regarding academic eligibility for athletics and activities has been updated this year. Grades are now checked weekly, and any student with more than one failing grade will be ineligible for competition the following week. Grades are pulled each Wednesday from the teachers’ gradebooks, and coaches are notified of any students with more than one “F” grade. Those students are ineligible for participation the following Monday through Saturday. Ineligible students can practice, but cannot compete, scrimmage, or dress in team uniform. If a student brings a grade up after the Wednesday report, it is a good step toward the following week’s grade check, but does not alter the week of ineligible status. Grades are not checked the first three weeks of the semester, since the low number of assignments can skew score averages. A warning report will be issued on the fourth week of the semester, and eligibility restrictions will take effect at the week five grade check. In accordance with CHSAA rules, grades are checked at the close of each semester and students passing less than 2.5 Carnegie units (5 full credit classes) are immediately restricted from participation until week nine of the following semester.
