Author and Date of the Book of James



James, brother of Jesus, was the leader of the church
is Jerusalem. James was an unbeliever during the
ministry of Jesus (John 7:3-5). Christ appeared to him
after resurrection (I Cor 15:7) led to his conversion.
耶稣的兄弟雅各，是耶路撒冷的教

The Jewish historian Josephus said that James was
stoned to death in AD 62. The Jerusalem church
council of Acts 15 convened in AD 49. Therefore, the
book was written between AD 48-62.

Purpose of the Book of James

analyzed the nature of genuine faith and urged Christians
to demonstrate the validity of their experience with Christ.
His concern was reality in religion, and he set forth the
practical claims of the Gospel.

Content of the Book of James

James directs Christians to godly living. In 108
verses, 54 clear commands are given. This
“bondservant of God” (1:1) writes as one
supervising other slaves. This is Christian
ethics compared with that from Christ.

Applications of the Book of James

does not deal with both personal and social issues
is a dead faith.

Truth 1. How to have patience in trials: The testing of
faith produces patience, the hallmark of mature
believers. The established heart will not waver, but will
rejoice in the knowledge of the God’s goodness.
Action 1. 1:2 Rejoice when trials come to test your
faith.
1:3 Know that patience results when your faith is
tested by trials.
1:4 Endure so that God has enough time to bring
about the Christlikeness He intends through trial.
1:5 Ask God for wisdom. He wants to help you through
your trials.
5:7-8 Develop patience: To receive the harvest and the

Truth 2. Being a doer of the Word: Obedience to the
Word of God brings about the work of God. We are to
hear the Word and do the work. To hear and to do
nothing is one sign of a deceived heart. Faith acts. To
believe is to do!
Action 2. 1:22-25 Evaluate! In what areas do you claim
faith, while your actions declare unbelief?
Acknowledge those areas.
Decide to act on the faith you have!
Practice today what you proclaim.

Truth 3. Learn to avoid partiality: Some may argue that
preferring the rich and famous is only human, but the
Bible rejects partiality. God is not an exalter of
persons: neither should His children be.
Action 3. 2:1-8 Be uninfluenced by a person’s social
status.
Show love to all without partiality.
2:9 Differentiate between sinful partiality and “due
honor” (Rom 13:7)

Truth 4. How to tame the tongue: Nothing can cause
more damage than the tongue. Keeping our speech
under closer control is a discipline believers must
develop.
Action 4. 3:1 Avoid being presumptuous! Do not take
the position of being a teacher until God has placed
you there.
3:2 Bridle your tongue! Monitor every word we speak
may seem cumbersome at first, but it will serve to
advance righteousness.
3:9-12 Speak well of others. Criticism, slander,
backbitting, and gossip are “bitter waters,” which

Truth 5. Steps in Developing Humility: True faith is
humble. Self-centeredness is the essence of
worldliness and is an enemy of God.
Action 5. 4:1-2 Renounce strife! Refuse unnecessary
argument and personal strife. Seek to be at peace with
others, preferring them to yourself.
4:7 Renounce rebellion! Submit yourself to God.
4:8 Be quick to confess sin! Nothing more effectively
humbles a man than to admit that he is a sinner.
4:11 Renounce slander! Speak highly of others.
4:13-16 Express continued dependence on God!
4:17 Do the good you know to do, regardless of the

Truth 6. The dangers of money: The Bible testifies that
money, though necessary and a blessing from God,
can be a dangerous commodity. Things we think we
own may really own us! God calls us to put material
goods into proper perspective and to use them wisely
under His direction.
Action 6. 1:10 Recognize all material possessions will
perish and have no eternal value.
5:1-6 Avoid unnecessary acquisition. Acquired wealth
can bring unwelcomed problems to your life.
Embrace simplicity! Simplicity and poverty are not the
same. Simplicity acts responsibly with what God gives

He Himself tempt anyone.” (1:13)
God has no malicious intent toward man—
ever. In fact, I Corinthians 10:13 assures us
that in the midst of temptation “God is
faithful.” Paul says unequivocally that when
temptation is about to overwhelm the
believer, God makes a way of escape. The
responsibility for fleeing temptation belongs
with the individual, but God delivers us.

“The tongue is a fire.” (3:6)
Proverbs 18:21 declares that death and life are
in the power of the tongue. The tongue will
either (1) be set ablaze by the Holy Spirit in the
beauty of spiritual language and be graced
with the authority to prophesy, praise, bless,
and give life, or (2) be set ablaze by hell and
unleash corruption, cursing, and death. The
authority of a believer to declare the promise of
the Lord in ministry situations is directly
related to the careful and conscious use of
one’s tongue for God’s purpose.

“The wisdom that is from above is first pure,
then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full
of mercy and good fruits, without partiality
and without hypocrisy.” (3:17-18)
This is also true of the people who have
allowed the Holy Spirit to perform these
works of grace in their lives. We become like
the One we worship. As we serve the Lord
and welcome the Holy Spirit’s
transformation in us, we are completely and
irreversibly changed to be like Jesus.

“Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” (4:7)
Protecting God’s people from the work of the devil is
based on two important factors. The first is our
submission to God in both word and spirit. The Bible
offers complete resources for establishing
righteousness in a person’s walk with the Lord, leaving
no room for a satanic foothold. The second is our
forceful resistance to demonic intrusion (v. 7) The
“violence” of the kingdom of heaven (Matt 11:12) is not
passive action; “pressing into” the kingdom of God (Lk
16:16) is aggressive and bold. Through prayer,
fasting, and unrelenting witness our spiritual warfare
(2 Cor 10:4) is victorious.

“Is anyone among you sick?” (5:13-16)
It is the responsibility of the sick to seek out
eldership to pray. The anointing with oil in 5:14
is not done for medical purposes. It symbolizes
the presence of the Holy Spirit. In some
traditions, anointing with oil is performed only
when death is imminent. Prayer and anointing
will bring healing. Anointing with oil is part of
the healing process. Confession of sin can be
a crucial part for physical healing. Jesus came
to save us in spirit, soul, and body (I Thess.
5:23).
