Lord Of The Flies
HOPE
By: Jacki, Darcie, and Kyle
Theme Statement
• When lack of supervision and
responsibility is neglectful, it will ultimatley
result in omission of hope, which leads to
barbaric and primitive behavior.
QUOTES:
Supporting evidence of hope
• “There’s another thing. We can help them to find us. If a
ship comes near the island they may not notice us. So
we must make smoke on top of the mountain. We must
make a fire.”
PAGE 37
• Since Ralph was elected leader, he had directed his
efforts towards being rescued alone. He had planned to
make a fire in hope of getting rescued.
QUOTES: (continued)
• “They accepted the pleasures of morning, the bright sun,
the whelming sea and sweet air, as time when play was
good and life so full that hope was not necessary and
therefore forgotten.” PAGE 60
• The Significance of this quote is their well being and
civilization guiding them through the day. They get along
in the morning and do not have anything to fear. Ralph
realizes the strength hope can give and take away. He
also realizes how much he had and how lucky he truly
was.
QUOTES: (continued)
• Ralph spoke. “You let the fire out.” The repetition made
Jack uneasy. He looked at the twins and than back at
Ralph. “We had to have them in the hunt.” PAGE 73
• Ralph is not pleased with the fact that the fire was left to
burn out, and is very angered by Jack’s neglect towards
his authority. The purpose of the fire was to have faith
that rescue was possible and that someone would find
them. Jack does not seem to be bothered by this and is
more interested in hunting. This then brings conflict
between the two boys who are struggling for power.
QUOTES: (continued)
• “Look at us! How many are we? And yet we cant keep a
fire going to make smoke. Don’t you understand? Cant
you see we ought to-ought to die before we let the fire
out?” PAGE 86
• The significance of this quote is highlighting the desire to
be rescued. Everyone is starting to forget how important
rescue is and how badly they need to be saved. This
quote is directing them back to the idea of rescue and
making them realize that the signal fire is more
important.
QUOTES: (continued)
• “..You have doctors for everything, even the inside of
your mind. You don’t really mean that we got to be
frightened all the time of nothing? Life.” PAGE 90
• The significance of this quote is projecting Piggy’s hope
and desire to survive. Piggy has hope that they can all
survive without turning into savages, that their own
minds can heal themselves because its life, and he’s
trying to stay positive.
QUOTES: (continued)
• “This is more than a hunter’s job,” said Ralph at last,
“because you can’t track the beast. And don’t you want
to be rescued?” PAGE 111
• Most of the kids on the island have completely given up
on trying to get rescued. They have now adapted to
their new environment and lifestyle under Jack’s
influence. Ralph refuses to ignore rescue, and maintains
hope even when everyone else has forgotten.
QUOTES: (continued)
• “..You’ll get back alright. I think so, anyway.”
PAGE 121
• Simon has hope that because of Ralphs intelligence and
grace he will survive the temptations of savagery and
follow the plans of rescue and staying civilized. Simon
knows the beast is inside of them – and he knows that
Ralph does not have the beast within him.
QUOTES: (continued)
• The seconds lengthened. Ralph was looking straight into
the savage’s eyes. Don’t scream. You’ll get back.
PAGE 221
• The significance of this quote is Ralph’s strive for hope
at a desperate time. When the savages were chasing
after him, he had given himself a boost of hope by
repeating to himself what Simon had told him earlier.
QUOTES: (continued)
• “Who’s boss here? The navy officer asked. “I am,” said
Ralph loudly.
PAGE 224
• The significance of this quote is that, even though the
savages were about to kill Ralph, Ralph claims he is the
leader of the savages. When the boys begin to loose
their civilization, Ralph keeps his desires under control
while knowing that even when times are low he was the
true leader.
Hope
• In dire circumstances hope can be used as
a final chance for survival. As the story
progresses all the boys have fully adapted
to Jack’s lifestyle except for Ralph. Hope is
slowly lost in every boy throughout the
story and by the very end as Ralph is
hunted by his original tribe members he
feels himself holding onto the only hope
he has left as a means of survival.
