1470 Wavelength
Endovenous Ablations
The new wave in Endovenous
Ablation
In 1989, Puglisi and his colleagues of the
School of Malan (Milan) firstly reported
at the IUP Congress in Strasbourg, the
use of endovenous Laser to treat
varicose saphenous veins.

Diode Lasers
• Mechanism of action haemogloblin
absorption.
• 810
• 940
• 980
• Similar in results, complication rates,
post operative pain
980 Wavelength Laser vs.
VNUS Closure
• 980 laser
• VNUS Closure
• Better results
• Lower
Complications
• Cost effective to
perform
• Simple procedure
• Less postoperative
pain
• More published
literature to support
use.
Disadvantage Lasers
• More post procedure pain
1370 Laser
• Introduced 2005
• Mechanism of action more water
absorption
• Result: less post operative pain
1470 Laser
• Biolite Tech
• Better water absorption than previous
wavelength lasers
• Single use Radial Fiber
• When a narrow (collimated) beam of light
passes through a substance, the beam will lose
intensity due to two processes: The light can be
absorbed by the substance, or the light can be
scattered (i.e., the photons can change
direction) by the substance. Just looking at the
narrow beam itself, the two processes cannot
be distinguished. However, if a detector is set
up to measure light leaving in different
directions, or conversely using a non-narrow
beam, one can measure how much of the lost
intensity was scattered, and how much was
absorbed.
Thermalite 1470
• Bare tip fiber can be re-used
• Same results
• Cost effective
My Experience
• 2900 Endovenous Ablations from
• Feb 2003 - present.
• 472 endovenous ablations with the
1470 wavelength laser Oct 1, 08 - Oct
30, 09.
• 37 patients treated with Thermalite
Laser
Findings

472 ablations
1 Failure
No DVT
Pain ranged 1-2 on a 10 point scale
Patient could resume normal activity
immediately.
