Approximation of Volume and Branch Size

I present an approach to automatically approximate the volume and
branch size distribution of trees from terrestrial laser scanner produc
ed point clouds. The approach is based on the assumption that the p
oint cloud is a sample of a surface in 3D space and the surface is loc
ally like a cylinder. The point cloud is covered with small neighborhoo
ds which agree approximately on the local geometry of the surface. T
hen the neighborhoods are characterized geometrically and these ch
aracterizations are used to classify the points into trunk, branch, and
other points. Finally appropriate subsets are determined for cylinder f
itting using geometric characterizations of the subsets.
