Makira Island, Solomon Islands

MAKIRA BRIDGES – MANAGEMENT AND FINANCING
• Finance: AusAID, NZAID, ADB (grant funds)
• Management by ADB
• EA: SI Ministry of Infrastructure
• Project Management:

• Contractor: McConnell Dowell NZ.
• Crossings create connectivity, alleviate poverty
and improve way of life for locals.
Makira Bridges
• Challenges:
– Rivers are braided, some carry large debris loads;
– High peak rainfall;
– Seismic effects;
– Remote sites.
– Limited budget. Low traffic volumes favour low
level, submergible structures, and do not justify
high level bridges throughout.

PROVISIONS
* Separate SECTION of Specification dedicated to Design and
Construction of High Level Bridges.
 Design criteria in Bid Documents: Bidder submits Concept
Bridge Proposal in reasonable detail;
 Design Engineer, Geotechnical Engineer, Independent
Design Reviewer: To be nominated with Bid, and on
completion of tasks, to issue certificates;
 Contractor to submit full details, but Engineer does not
approve
 Contractor’s Design Engineer to make inspections.

• Advantages of Design Build
– Contractor can provide a standard or existing design to
his and Employer’s cost and time advantage;
– Design and geotechnical risks transferred to contractor.
• Design Form Proposed: Tied Steel Arch, 75m span. As
specified : above 100 year flood, T44 loading, single lane
with concrete deck.
• Outcome: Very successful.
