Quality of Life in Old Age until the End
Dialogue between Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine
There is urgency to develop palliative care services for elderly patients,
experts say. For this reason, the Vice-President of the European
Parliament Gianni Pittella, in collaboration with the Maruzza Lefebvre
Foundation, promoted a first ever dialogue between palliative medicine
and geriatrics at an EU level. The event took place at the European
Parliament in Brussels on September 25th 2012.
The event is embedded into the framework of the European Year for Active Ageing and Intergenerational
Solidarity.
At this occasion, the EAPC and the European Union Geriatric Medicine Society
(EUGMS) launched a joint manifesto promoting a European action plan on palliative
care and geriatrics.
The objective is to improve the quality of life of elderly patients with chronic diseases
and cut back on health care costs by up to 60 per cent. Its ultimate scope is to insert
geriatric palliative care in the EU agenda,
hoping it becomes a human right one day.
The manifesto can be downloaded from the EAPC website

Mapping of paediatric palliative care services in
Europe.
The aim of this project is to build a map of services of PPC present
in Europe by collecting data relative to the organization of each
service and its role in training and research (if any).
The objectives are:
• To gather information on paediatric palliative care (PPC)
provision in Europe.
• To identify possible critical aspects in the number and
organisation of PPC services in relation to the estimated
needs.
• To propose the data obtained as a guide to optimise the
use of available resources.
• To diffuse the information at all levels (administrators,
health providers, professionals, and the general public).

The EAPC Research Network
In 2007 Stein Kaasa, of the University of Trondheim,
took over the chair and coordination of the Research
Network and created the European Palliative Care
Research Centre based in Trondheim.
He invites all healthcare professionals who see the potential in
conducting European multicentre research, to take part in developing a
platform for this type of research within the EAPC Res Net .
The EAPC Research Network can offer:
1. An established structure for collaborative research
2. A potential for further development of this collaboration
3. A research centre as an external infrastructure for taking care of data
handling, organization of studies
4. A meeting point for discussions and exchange of knowledge
5. The biannual EAPC Research Congress
6. A Junior Forum for PhD students and other less experienced researchers
