2-Digit Multiplication Dance By: The Digit Dancers Once upon a time there were 4 little digits – 3, 4, 5 & 6. They decided they wanted to enter a dance competition. They put their heads together and chose partners. 3 & 4 would be partners and 5 & 6 would be partners. This is how it went: The Dance Begins The Guys are at the top and the Gals are at the bottom. 35 – Guys x46 - Gals Grab Your Partner & Multiply 35 – Guys x46 - Gals 210 The dancing must start with the bottom right gal. The first little gal (6) dances with guy (5) first. 5 x 6 = 30 Put down the 0 and carry the 3 to Guy (3). The same little gal (6) next must dance with guy (3). So, 6 x 3 = 18 + 3 we carried makes 21. The score is now 210. We have a Problem!!! • All of a sudden unbelievable crying begins. • This poor little girl named Molly wants to be in the competition, but she doesn’t know how to dance. • Being the nice little digits they are, they tell Molly to step in and hold a place. • Molly becomes the most important person in the dance competition. Let’s get back to dancing… 35 - Guys x46 - Gals 210 +140 Molly Gal (6) is through dancing and so she will rest. The next little gal (4) will dance. She must dance with guy (5) first just as the first little gal did. 4 x 5 = 20 Put down the 0 and carry the 2 up above guy (3). Now gal (4) will dance with the next guy (3) 4 x 3 = 12 + 2 = 14 Next score to record is 140 in front of Molly. Now, for the final score! Add the two scores together. Now, for the final score…. 35 - Guys x46 - Gals 210 Molly +140 1610
