Let’s review marking gridded responses on WESTEST. The grid looks something like this. Write your answer at the top – one digit in each box. 1 9 8 2 Then fill in the right circle below each digit. 1 9 8 2 Easy enough. Right?? But some people still make silly goofs! This mistake was common. Can you figure it out? 7 5 That’s right! No circles were gridded in! Even more kids made this mistake. Can you spot it? Correct! No digits written at the top! Let’s look at some of the other mistakes kids made. The right answer is… 7 7 7 7 7 Wow! Too many 7s! The right answer for this one is…27 2 7 No spaces in between your digits, please! How’s my spacing? 237 is the next correct answer. What’s the gridded mistake? 2 3 7 That mistake was tougher to spot! I saw it! Two circles were filled in the same column! Sometimes, the mistake was as simple as filling in the wrong circle. Like this… 5 Be careful not to make this same mistake! 8 3 Here’s another goof. The right answer is… 4 4 0 0 0 I guess somebody thought the zeros didn’t add any value. How about this one? The right answer is 143. 143 TOO CROWDED!! One digit per box, please! This next mistake is really goofy! 3 f t NO abbreviations or letters of any kind should EVER be put in the boxes! Let’s talk about fractions! If you are in 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade, there are NO FRACTION ANSWERS in the gridded responses! What have we learned? I learned you need to be really, really careful filling in the gridded response questions! That’s it for 3rd, 4th, or 5th graders! We hope you remember all we’ve told you about today and don’t make the same silly mistakes. Good luck on the WESTEST!! Stay tuned if you’re a sixth grader! Okay 6th graders, we have more to talk about regarding fractions and gridded responses… Here are some things to remember. •Reduce fractions to lowest terms. •Use the diagonal line on the grid as your fraction bar. •Remember…one digit or fraction bar per box. What’s wrong with this example? 2/ 5 2 / This is the correct way! 5 Mixed numbers on the WESTEST are written differently from what you do in your math class! Remember these steps! •Leave or rewrite a mixed number as an IMPROPER FRACTION!!! •OR Change the mixed number into a whole number and a decimal. How do we grid a mixed number such as 3 ½? NOT THIS WAY! Remember the right steps. 3 1 / 2 3 ½ as an improper fraction is 7/2… 7 / 2 OR 3.5 as a decimal. 3 . 5 You’ve got to concentrate and be careful when filling in the grids for mixed number answers!
