Overview
• Soil Data Viewer can be used to create reports
and thematic maps associated with soil
attributes, typically at the map unit level
• SDV 6.0 is compatible with ArcGIS 10.0
– 6.1 is in development for use with 10.1 and up
• Demonstrate how to download, setup, and
use SSURGO data with SDV
• Demonstrate how to load SDV toolbar into
ArcMap

Soil Data Mart
• Current NRCS site for public download of
SSURGO (Soil Survey Geographic) GIS data
http://soildatamart.nrcs.usda.gov
• Soil Data Mart will be shutting down in the
near future
• Download access will be moving to Web Soil
Survey (WSS) at WSS 3.0 release

(Current WSS release is 2.3)

• Downloading Indiana data to use with SDV 6.0
– Download Spatial AND Tabular (database) files
– Download Shapefiles
• File Geodatabases are not supported by SDV 6.0, but
will be supported in SDV 6.1 (in development)
– Select the Indiana Template Access 2002
Database, latest version (version 33 as of 4/26/13)
– Select a coordinate system for best compatibility
with your work and the geographic location of
interest

SDV 6.0 Add-In Procedure
• Close ArcGIS if running
• Install Soil Data Viewer 6.0 (requires admin)
– Download links and instructions at:
http://soils.usda.gov/sdv/download60.html
• Run the ESRI Add-In file to add an SDV launch
icon to ArcMap 10.0 (does not require admin)
• Customize ArcMap menus to activate/display
the SDV toolbar/button

• After install, the ESRI Add-In file is found at:
C:\Program Files (x86)\USDA\Soil Data Viewer 6.0
• Double-click SDVArcMapAddin.esriAddIn
• Click Install Add-In
• Close the installer if it does not
close automatically

SDV 6.0 Add-In Procedure
• Start ArcMap
• Enter Customize Mode
• Activate the SDV Toolbar
• A one button toolbar appears
• Dock the toolbar/button

Using SDV 6.0 with ArcMap
• Add soil polygon map unit data to the map
• (Optional) Use Clip from ArcToolbox to extract
an area of interest from the larger survey
– Requires another polygon file to be created for
use as the clipping extent
• Activate Soil Data Viewer from the toolbar
button
• Select soil layer from the map to use as the
spatial component

• Select soil layer from the map to use as the
spatial component
• Select soil tabular database to associate with
the spatial layer
– This is the database we built earlier, stored in the
tabular folder if you followed these instructions

• If SDV was previously used with a different
survey area, a soil unit mismatch error
message will appear instead. Click OK to
bypass the message.
• If you get the error message and bypass it, you
need to click the folder on the Database line in
the next window and navigate to a SSURGO
database that corresponds to your spatial data

status in the lower right is green
