A Volcano in Your Kitchen A volcano is one of the most spectacular sights in nature. Volcanoes like Kilauea, in Hawaii, are formed when lava pours out of an opening in the Earth. Lava is hot, liquid rock that flows from beneath the Earth’s crust. Lava running running down a volcano cools and hardens. Eventually, the lava builds up the sides of a volcano, allowing it to grow as big as a mountain. You don’t have to travel to Hawaii to see a volcano up close.
